Michael had some trouble with adding and subtracting fractions with the sub (I believe trying a different method). I had him start over and think about the way that we've doing it, and he did much better.
1) Review yesterday's paraphrasing lesson. Have Michael describe what it means to paraphrase.
2) Practice paraphrasing several primary sources from our textbook. Afterwards, Michael and I edit his ideas using strong verbs and vocabulary.
Michael did do the video research I assigned, but on Libya instead of Syria. But when I asked him to tell me about what he'd learned, he again was very limited in the details and had little to no opinion about the issue. This led to a bigger discussion about the importance of details in analysis and communication. He's not a detail oriented guy, but if he wants to be a web designer, the details will be critical. The only thing he seems to be really interested in is professional wrestling, but when I asked him to tell me about the current storylines, he again could provide very little information. This a consistent problem for him, but I am convinced he can improve if he really works at it. So, for homework tonight I'm having him research wrestling and be able to talk about it tomorrow.
One of the real issues we've been dealing with is Michael's lack of opinion or real interest in anything. When he reads, he's so focused on forming the words, he rarely pays attention to what he's reading, and in his own words, he really doesn't have opinions. We read an interesting essay today about a doctor who believes in being a life-long learner. That's a term Michael is not familiar with, so we spent the class talking about it. I stressed the importance of paying attention and forming opinions. He's not going to get the information from reading, so I suggested video based research. So, his homework tonight is to find as much information about the situation in Syria as he can, and be able to talk about it tomorrow. We'll see how he does.
Michael has been having trouble with his newspaper article, the biggest obstacle being that he hasn't done any work on it outside of class. So we spent the class time trying to find to more events for him to write about and then writing about them. He says he'll try to finish the article this weekend, we'll see how it goes.
1)Michael finishes typing and editing his Zombie essay.
2)Michael and I watch an episode of The Walking Dead and he provides a detailed summary of the climactic moment of the video in a written assignment.
