Building Words to read and spell with the -ab Family
Lesson Outline
I am so impressed with Patrick differentiating his bs and ds so quickly. He seemed to really struggle with the letters, but successfully discriminated between the letters today with little prompting. "b's have bellies and d's don't" has seemed to help him a lot. We reviewed the -ab sound and Patrick used letter tiles to build -ab words. I gave him several consonants and he had to determine the letters that made a real word versus the ones that don't. For example, he realized that adding h to -ab does not make a word, but adding c to -ab does. Then we used word ladders to write a list of -ab words. Lastly, patrick wrote a simple sentence using 2 of the -ab words we discussed today. Today Patrick took his first speed test. Our goal was to complete 10 problems correctly in 30 seconds. Patrick completed 10 problems in 35 seconds correctly, which was awesome for the first day! Next, Patrick explained to me with models how the commutative property works. He understands that the order of the numbers in addition problem does not change the answer:) Lastly, I introduced steps for solving word problems. (1 Find the important numbers 2)Find the important words 3) Write a number sentence 4) Solve the problem with a math strategy (Pictures or tally marks). Patrick was very successful!

Today Patrick continued to work on a story entitled ,The Choice. He proceeded to accurately identify the main idea of the passage. He also identified and matched vocabulary terms from the story with their correct definitions. Then Patrick responded to HOT- higher order thinking questions in complete sentences. We used teachable moments to focus on tenses and writing formation. Patrick is doing very well. He also began the next lesson. He learned new vocabulary and read a passage called, The Happy Hippo, which we will reread tomorrow.
Patrick and I reviewed the 3 main living communities (urban, suburban and rural). Patrick completed a community sort. Next we reviewed nouns looking at certain community pictures and identifying nouns within the scene. Patrick wrote the initial letters for the word of each noun that he found and I helped him to complete the word when needed. Patrick seems to have a clear understanding of nouns, so we will move onto verbs Friday. Lastly Patrick read "I Live Here" from the Wonders anthology. Patrick has successfully learned his sight word "big". We will focus on the other 4 before adding new words.

What is the homework expectation? Do I need to assign daily homework?
Today Patrick and I played Take a Card. He is demonstrating a clear understanding of the addition math strategies we have worked on in our sessions. We will now move to adding with mental math with speed and fluency. I will begin by giving Patrick daily speed sessions. Tomorrow I will test Patrick on 10 basic addition problems through 10 in 30 seconds. He seems confident and excited. To practice mental math strategies (finding the biggest number and counting on) we played addition war.
Review plant parts and what each part does. Review vocabulary: fruits, stem, roots, seedling, seed, flowers, leaves, and trunk. Go over the questions on page A52 and 53.
