short a, sight words, main idea/details
Lesson Outline
Patrick was introduced to 10 spelling words containing the short a sound. I tested him out of 3 letter short a words, and moved into 4 and 5letters. (slam, plan, smack, etc.) He rose to the challenge and was excited to practice spelling larger words. He used letter magnets to apply beginning, middle, and end sounds of his spelling words. To practice phonemic awareness, he would spell a word, listen to a new word I'd say, and pay careful attention to what remained the same in the word, and what needed to be changed to create the second word. We played a magnetic version of Hangman with his spelling words. He loved this game and was very motivated and proactive with practicing his new words. We played "In a Flash" with his sight words to be able to immediately identify the word at first sight. He leveled his jail words as easy, medium or difficult. We read "What has these Feet?" He identified ALL of his sight words this time. He wrote a detail to extend the story.

Typing/Fast ForWord/ LB
Lesson Outline
In Patrick's Lindamood-Bell program he described a picture about a little boy doing a headstand. He did a nice job eliciting a response to his first routine question-"the gestalt". Then he proceeded to verbalize other details of the picture. He used his cards to elaborate more effectively and he used gestures to assist, as well. Patrick did a super job in typing today. I was so proud to hear him request that I hide the keyboard on the screen which aids him in finding the proper keys. Judy popped in our room to observe Patrick's progress, and she was impressed to see how far he's come already! Patrick continued working in his Fast ForWord program.

Lesson Topic
sight words, writing complete sentences, syllables
Lesson Outline
Patrick re-read yesterday's story, "What Has These Stripes?" to Yanuell. Some of his new sight words were very difficult for him to recall from yesterday, such as: these, what, other, etc.) He extended the book, by writing two additional pages. The book concluded with saying that "Some animals have no stripes." Patrick generated ideas of which animals don't have stripes, and chose two of his examples to include in the book. Following the authors pattern, he wrote a complete sentence for each, incorporating vocabluary and sight words commonly seen in the book. During discussion, he said "Pigs absolultey have no stripes" so I encouraged him to include that word even though he was shocked to be expected to include such a large word. We worked on breaking up larger words into syllables, and listening and applying one chunk at a time. He was successful with breaking up the words verbally, but much more difficult in writing. We reviewed his sight words, and determined if they were "jail words" that were breaking the law (sound/spelling rules) or following it. He was successful in identifying most law breaking words. He went on the computer and found images to decorate his jail word wall board in his classroom. This will be a tool Patrick can refer to during writing.

Patrick played Math Slam, an engaging, electronic game to develop his math fact drills. He also practiced ordering numbers from least to greatest. He was successful with up to four numbers. When we progressed to numbers with two digits, it became too difficult for his current level. He enjoyed this game and seems motivated to memorize his facts.

Lesson Comments
Patrick is very attentive in class and is doing extremely well with understanding the information and being able to play what I show him. To be able to begin forming simple chords within two classes is quite impressive. I have very high hopes for how far he will be able to go with the guitar this year.
