Patrick seemed a little tired today during his session. He performed alright, just had hoped with the progress he's been making, the description would have been better. I think it was just an off day; we all have those! He needed frequent prompting to use his words. After prompting, he was cooperative and successful in contributing important details. The pictures that he describes, will begin to get more detailed so it is important that he can verbalize everything he notices, keeping the main "what" in mind.
Patrick had snack with his peers. He has transitioned so nicely, and has easily attained many new friends. He's a very lovable child by nature. Patrick played "Make a Ten-Go Fish" to learn the combinations of addends that make ten. (7+3, 2+8, etc.) Prior to starting, he only knew 10+0. By the end of the lesson, he memorized all 11 combinations. This game was played to the concept of Go Fish, but Patrick had to first choose a number card in his hand, identify the addend that with it would make ten, and then ask for it to make a match. During the game, we used the "count on" approach to discover what addend he needed. Towards the end of the game, he was able to quickly recall what number was needed. Following the game, we posted his cards on his door in sequential order. We started with 0, and he had to pull the card from the deck that would satisfy a sum of ten. He played an math facts application on the iPad where a number was posted on the screen. He had to quickly tap the matching number to make ten. If he didn't do it in time, a wall of number bricks would begin to stack up. This was a fun, motivational game to beat the clock. He had a blast and loved the challenge. :)
Patrick played "Sparkle Spelling" with his short a spelling words. He sat in his chair facing me, with his back to the words on his board. I'd announce a word, and we alternated spelling it one letter at a time, practicing beginning, middle, and end phonemic awareness. Whoever was last, would say "sparkle" and earn a point. Patrick earned a little notebook for winning, and used it to record his sight words from the first day of school until today in alphabetical order. He read and then re-read Playful Puppy before taking a comprehension quiz. He scored 5/5 questions correctly. He added his new sight words for today: little, let, be, and see.
Patrick did a great job today in typing. He has almost completed Level 3. Today he was working on using the keyboard to type all homerow keys, e, i, r, and u. I am astonished at how far he has come already. Patrick continues to work on his Fast ForWord program. Today he worked in a game called Space Commander where he practices following specific directions. In Hoop Nut, he practices listening to different sounds which will help improve attention. He also played a learning game called Ele-bot, which focuses on listening and grammar skills. Patrick did fantastic in Lindamood-Bell today. He was successful in providing lots of details in order to create a picture in my mind. He described a boy biking up a ramp and demonstrated his new knowledge by using all of his structure words. Patrick is a joy to teach and I know I am lucky to be able to work with him each day!
