Phonemic Awareness, Spelling, Decoding, Sight Words
Lesson Outline
Patrick completed three games in Fast ForWord where he practiced the following: Sorting pictures or written words by first, last or middle sound; choosing the correct letter to change one word into another; finding the written word that matches the spoken word. Through these games he improved his skills in: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, spelling, decoding skills, sight word recognition, and left-to-right visual tracking.
We had to go in the computer lab and work with the headphones today, and Will did an excellent job! He didn't let himself get distracted, he stayed focused, took his time, and did well on all three exercises.
We didn't get much time to work on fastforword due to the full school picture process. But Will did get one exercise done (fill in the blank). At first he was having trouble, but then without any prompting from me, he announced, "I just have to slow down and take my time, " which he did and he started doing better. I was very pleased! It was great to see him recognize it on his own.
Patrick completed two exercises in Fast ForWord where he practiced the following skills: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. He was required to sort pictures or written words by the first, last, or middle sound, and read and complete sentences by filling in missing words.
We didn't get the full class for fastforword today in lieu of the Dr. Seuss reading/celebration. Will enjoyed the books, but afterward we had time for one exercise, sentence completions, in which he did very well again.
Will did a very good job today with combining sentences. He really slowed down and took the time think each one out. He had a little trouble with the spelling, but there were some difficult words.
Will seemed to have difficulty with the sentence combination exercise. In fact, he's having a rough reading week in general. On the bright side, he did a great job with spelling today. I only helped him when they started a new rule or vowel sounds, and then left it up to him to make the connections. I was very pleased with the result.
Patrick completed several activities where he sorted pictures or written words by first, last, or middle sound. He also practiced listening, reading along, and answering questions about increasingly challenging passages. He practiced vocabulary and answered 'wh-' questions. Finally, he played a game where he chose the correct letters to change one word to another.
Will had a little trouble focusing when we first started. He was doing the sentence combination exercise, and had a lot of problems focusing on the subject and action of each sentence. But once he finished that exercise, he did very well on the punctuation and spelling.
