Comparing Numbers and Ordering numbers
Lesson Outline
Today Anna and Quinn worked on comparing numbers and putting them in the correct order. We began class by reviewing place value and how to read a 6 digit number. We went over their homework and practiced comparing numbers. Then we practiced ordering numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. We talked about how we have to look at how many digits each number has and then each place value to determine the order of the numbers. Anna and Quinn did many practice problems on their worksheet and the board. They both also worked on their Mad Minute App and Sumdog.

Geography and Pirates
Lesson Outline
Today, we started class by reviewing the differences between primary and secondary sources. Anna vividly remembered reading the letter (primary source) last week about the shooting of Abraham Lincoln. I asked them to think of what a primary source from their lives might be. Next, we looked at how to read a map. They learned about the rose compass and distance scale. Using rulers I showed them how we could determine the distance from Florida to the continent of Africa. We also reviewed the 5 oceans and the 7 continents. At the end of the session, we signed on to their e-studies weekly page and learned about female pirates in the 17th century. Anna and Quinn were, naturally, curious about pirates, but I reminded them that pirates arose because of increased water travel between Europe and the New World.

Review of animals
Lesson Outline
We reviewed animals that we learned last year. We read two basic books in Spanish, on about farm animals and one about pets. The books also used adjectives to describe the pets - big, small, fast, slow, etc. At the end of class we played bingo in Spanish since the kids enjoy it so much and it's good numbers practice

Lesson 1-5 Comparing numbers
Lesson Outline
Today Anna and Quinn, used the less than and greater than signs to compare numbers. Anna began class on Sumdog and Quinn and I worked. We began by reviewing our homework and how to read 6 digit numbers. We then talked about comparing numbers. We discussed that you have to start by comparing the number of digits there are in each number. Then you must look from the left to the right (thousands to ones place) comparing each number. For instance the number 953 starts with a 9 and the number 1,569 starts with a 1. The number that begins with the 1 is larger because it had more digits. We completed the guided practice together and then Quinn completed the 8 independent work questions. Quinn answered 7 of the 8 questions correctly! Anna and Quinn switched playing on Sumdog. Anna and I did the same lesson that Quinn and I did and she answered all 8 of the independent work questions correct. They both did very well and showed they have a good understanding of this topic.

Lesson 1-4 and 1-5
Lesson Outline
Today was a great day in math class! Anna and Quinn were both very focused and hard working. I setup Anna and Quinn on the math program Sumdog. This program allows Anna and Quinn to each work on their addition facts while playing games. Their progress is tracked and the program increases the difficulty of the questions as they are ready for them. I am able to pick which math topics or facts that they will work on. Anna and Quinn each spent 15 minutes on this program today. They took turns playing and when it was the others turn we were able to work one on one on reviewing their homework and working on today's topic. In today's lesson Anna and Quinn learned that 1,700 could also be said or written as 17 hundred. They practiced naming and writing 4 digit numbers. In the last 15 minutes of class we worked all together. We talked about comparing numbers using the symbols for less than and greater than. We will continue this lesson tomorrow.

Discussion of new yoga charts for class; active and aerobic exercise, hooping, centering, and relaxation
Lesson Outline
Anna and Quinn seem excited about our new Sticker System for yoga class. We'll have yoga charts for each month, with a grading system of minus, check, or sticker. At the end of the month, they can also earn a super-size sticker. We discussed goals, including class behavior, attitude, and listening skills, specific to each child. Our class was very active today, with stretches with the hoops, active hooping, and jump roping. We "cooled down" with some big calming breaths and the balancing tree pose (that is done silently). After the tree pose, we laid down on the mats for a relaxation (corpse pose) to Native American flute music.
