Emma and I discussed the following topics today: how the New Deal promoted economic recovery, new laws enacted to regulate systems, obstacles to and criticism over the New Deal, life during the Great Depression, the causes and effects of the Dust Bowl, and the legacy of the New Deal in terms of reformed labor relations, welfare, and Social Security.
Emma and I discussed the following aspects of the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression: the golden age of the 20s and how it created issues that led to the crash, how the crash of 1929 is related to the crash and recession of 2008-2012, the difference between a depression and a recession, FDR, the FDR memorial and its statues and what they represent (soup kitchen lines, fireside chats), Projects in the New Deal such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Federal Writers Project, and the FDIC and how is protects us today.
Emma didn't quite understand the happenings of Act Two, so we reviewed what the first few scenes covered and discussed major characters and their relationships (John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, etc.). We then finished with a reading of Act Two of The Crucible, and we will discuss Mary Warren's dilemma tomorrow.
