Today Marina and I reviewed subtraction up to 6 digits. We also reviewed addition up to 6 digits and fractions. Marina and I will begin division next week!
It was a pleasure meeting with Marina today. We used the Studies Weekly lesson on "Volunteers," which focuses on "making a difference in the world" through care for the earth and each other. We looked into 10 different jobs that serve our community. Marina told me she's most interested in veterinary science and marine biology. She answered the review questions with 100% accuracy, and wrote her answers to discussion questions. Well done.
Today Marina began our session working in her cursive handwriting book. After that we had a long reading session. She read out loud from her new book and answered oral comprehension questions. She summarized and picked out main ideas and details. We also discussed new vocabulary relating to the book.

The Dolphin Project - All systems go!
Marina and I spent the hour discussing how the body systems work together during all kinds of situations. We talked about how mother dolphins might react when her calf wanders off and she cannot locate him. How the different sensory system would react to her distress, her heart would beat faster, her circulatory system would increase, and her eyes, ears, and echolocation skills would be on high alert. We talked about many situations and how the body systems we have been studying would come into play.

Lesson Comments
FYI: Marina was distracted, therefore much of this classtime today was spent working with her on focusing.
Today Marina did a fantastic job on her chapter 7 test. Marina earned a 93% on her math test today! This test focused on division word problems. Marina and I then reviewed her 9's facts. Marina took an online 9's fact quiz and earned an 83%. I gave Marina an hard copy of this test. She earned an 100%. I averaged these scored together for a total score of 91%.
Today Marina continued working on her end of the year Wilson project. Today Marina identified vowel-consonant-e syllable words. Marina began by identifying these words in a word sort. Then she went into various magazines to find words with these syllables. Marina and I also discussed that the e has to be silent and the vowel had to be long. Marina enjoyed adding these words to her folder. Great job Marina.
Today Marina and I began by making a bingo game for her 9's multiplication facts. The 9's hand trick confused Marina, so I taught her a different trick. When multiplying by 9, you drop the number one digit and the second digit adds to nine. For example, 9X6, drop the 6 to a 5, then add 4 to 5 go get 9. The answer is 45. Marina found this trick very helpful. She went back to her homework and quickly answered every fact correctly. Then we played our bingo game. During our second session, Marina and I went through one of the chapter 7 multiple choice tests together as a review. Marina did very well with these division concepts. Marina will take her chapter 7 test tomorrow.
Today Marina researched Grey wolf habitats. She made a list of what types of things would be found in their winter habitat and began a winter scene on a large piece of paper. She also took notes and started to plan her writing on the five different members of her "wolf pack."
