2-3 Direct Variation
Lesson Outline
I taught Hunter the concept of Direct Variation today. He learned that the constant of variation, k, is defined by y/x. Hunter caught on quickly to the concept. He identified functions that varied directly, found K for various functions, and then found y when given different values of x. In class, we worked through p. 74 (1-21 odd). His homework is p. 74 (4, 12, 14, 18, 22). He finished it in class.

Test Review
Lesson Outline
Hunter and I reviewed his Algebra 2 Test from last Thursday on Solving Linear Equations. He made a 84. He has an Error Explanation Chart the he can fill out with the correct way to solve the problems he got wrong. It is due Monday, and he will gain points for every correct answer he gets. I was subbing for Economics this session, so we did math.

Drafting Board Use
Lesson Outline
How to use a drafting board, horizontal bar, and triangle to make architectural 2 pt. perspective of Hunter's dream home. He is quick to pick up the coordinated use of the horizontal bar and triangle. Since auto mechanics is a part of Industrial Arts, we spent the last 15 minutes under the hood of Hunter's 2002 Chevy truck checking the fluids such as oil and transmission fluid. Oil level is good, but the transmission level should be checked weekly as it is maybe a half quart low. Great session.

"Master and Commander," the novel
Lesson Outline
We continued to read from Chapter 2 of the novel. We met Mr. James Dillon who was preparing to go aboard HMS Sophie and who, the author hints, has a mysterious connection with Steven Maturin. We used "Sea of Words" to look up "cable" as a unit of measure ( 200 yards = 100 fathoms. I remembered!)

Vocabulary Quiz and Essay
Lesson Outline
Hunter took the Vocabulary Quiz today. We will revisit in two more weeks. We discussed and practiced use of words, admittedly many, but also acknowledge loss of two weeks of our class, and agreed that he would benefit from more usage and practice and a second Quiz at that time. We will not add to, other than those used in context of Mark Twain's satire "Advice to Youth" which we continued analyzing today. Part of lesson is to guess at old English word meaning from context and then define. (beseech, didactic, lark, etc.) Hunter did recall many of the vocabulary words with my reminders/hints. We discussed his essay topic at length today and put together a packet of information along with his marked-up notecards which he will take home over the weekend and bring back, for homework, in our next class, next Tuesday. His homework, admittedly indefinite, is to take a next step towards his goal of writing the essay - either outline form, more complete notecards, or actual pen-to-paper. He has a two page paper on ethical, logical and emotional arguments on newspaper articles and a Newsela article I have provided. I also suggested he simply annotate them to provide notes for the foundation of the essay. He has outline format and pro and con argument from the news op ed.

Quiz on Graphing Equalities, Slope, Point-Slope Form
Lesson Outline
I gave Hunter a 10 question quiz on Graphing Lines, finding slope given 2 points, and writing and graphing equations of lines given a point and the slope of that line. He needed a little guidance along the way, but overall did well! He scored a 84! Most of his mistakes involved errors with integers and negative signs. As we progress through the course, and as Hunter gets more practice with his arithmetic, he will grow stronger in these skills.
