Today, Hunter and I read "Children of the Woods" (Barry) and "The Caged Bird" (Angelou). We discussed the nonfiction piece, and analyzed the metaphor and style of the poem. Hunter concluded by writing a final journal entry.

Lesson Outline
We used the textbook to explore the evolution of feudalism from the ruins of the Holy Roman Empire. Autonomous manors and fiefdoms were protected by knights and farmed by serfs.The role of noblewomen was not inconsiderable with Eleanor of Aquitaine playing a major role in the rule of France and that of England, courtesy of two successive marriages to French and English Kings.

We used the session to explore, via the textbook, the Viking influences on Europe. The Vikings, armed with their impressive seamanship capabilities, raided coastal European cities and plundered them extensively. Their influence on the collapsing Roman Empire was extensive.

Lesson Outline
The session began with a discussion of the open syllable exception sounds. The sounds for the vowels a and i in an open syllable were presented. Hunter read several of these words using syllable cards. Word cards from step 5 were presented next. Hunter fluently read these words. He charted 15/15 real words. Prior to the written part of the lesson, Hunter was asked to spell words using syllable cards. For the written part of the lesson Hunter spelled 10/10 real words and 5/5 nonsense words correctly. He was also given three additional review words and spelled them correctly.

Europe: The Middle Ages & The Holy Roman Empire
Lesson Outline
We used the textbook to explore what filled the vacuum of the collapsing Roman Empire--the Franks, Vikings, etc. We further explored the rise of Charlemagne, his alliance with Pope Leo III and his coronation as Emperor of Rome. We went to the computer lab for further research where we got into the Old Testament account of the Tower of Babel as a forerunner of the breakup of Latin into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian and Albanian with the arrival of Germanic tribes and Moors in Europe.
