Hunter is writing his own bill addressing gun control. It should be a bill that he would want to become a law. We've had great discussions on this topic.
During our first hour today, Hunter and I read aloud from "Of Mice and Men." During our second hour, we read more in the literature text "The Bat" by Roethke and "The Southern Mansion" by Bontemps. Hunter analyzed, discussed tone, and answered post-reading questions. He also completed grammar exercises from the workbook and decided on the next writing exercise - prompts for essay-writing.
Hunter and I read in the Prentice Hall Literature text "A Glow in the Dark from Woodsong" by Gary Paulsen and the poem "Mushrooms" by Sylvia Plath. We read pre-reading material and compared and contrasted, looking for tone and vocabulary in context. Afterwards, Hunter answered Review and Assessment questions. He continued and finished writing his alternate ending for "The Book Thief" in response to a prompt and did a great job!
Hunter will given a set of images that he downloaded from a previous session. The images will be of different properties, like a residential home, modern apartment building, and staged studio. He will have to write a description of the work that he did to the property. Of course this is made up information, but this way he is able to sell the work that he completes not only visually but verbally.
Hunter will find the remaining images that he was not able to collect in the last session. I will give him very specific direction for the final images that are needed.
What are the things to consider in finishing a basement? Some things to consider when converting a garage to living space. Why is mulch important in landscaping? How to sweat solder copper piping? These are some of the topics discussed in today's class. Excellent session!!
Today we took a break from functions. I gave Hunter a short practice Pert test. The PERT test is designed to show a student's readiness for Junior College. It covers a variety of math skills. Hunter got 7 out of 10 questions correct.
I then had him continue a "Math Review for Plumbing Apprentices" packet that I found online. It contains basic math concepts that a person intending to apprentice as a plumber would need to know. Although he is talking about getting a construction job with his Uncle, he has also mentioned plumbing, so I thought this would be a helpful activity for him to do.

Hunter was pretty tired and unmotivated today. He said that Mondays and Fridays are the hardest days for him. I opted to give him the easier math work, because I could tell that he just didn't have the capacity to move forward with the material on functions today. We will return to it next week.
