Enigma -
Yanuell and I continued to search for clues and hints in the book ‘Enigma’ by Graeme Base. Once we had searched each photo for clues, we examined the clues and deduced the key to the code and opened the decoder. Next week we will decode the codes and find the missing items.

Yanuell and I read the book ‘Enigma’ by Graeme Base. The book starts as a nice story about some retired magicians who have lost their magical items. It is a nice story, but like all books by this author, there is more than a story involved. The book instructs the reader to find the magical rabbit in each illustration, along with nine rabbit footprints. Also there are hidden clues to find, which will provide a key to a code. At the end of the book is adecoder to use once the key is found. Today we read the story, and found the rabbit in half the illustrations. We will continue next week.

‘The Last King of Angor Wat’-
Yanuell and I read the book ‘The Treasure of Angor Wat’ by Graeme Base. We have enjoyed his other books in the past and this was a new treasure. The book follows four animals as they are sent on a journey to find the ancient ruins of Angor Wat. During the journey they are beset upon several trials, each designed to determine the character of the animal. It is determined that no single animal has the qualities to be king. There are puzzles and hidden messages in the artwork of any book by this author, and so they are always a treat.

Matter and Waves -
I asked Yanuell what he was learning in his regular science class. He showed me his current science notebook, and discussed the states of matter. I showed Yanuell his old science notebook, and we reviewed the scientific process, and compared his work from last year to now. I reviewed with Yanuell the manner by which energy travels through waves, and how much of the energy we encounter travels on matter. We also talked about how light energy travels without matter.

Aquarium Care -
Yanuell and I worked at finding what was amiss with his aquarium. We partially emptied and cleaned the aquarium. We added some plants and treated the water to make sure the fish were happy. We found no cause for the ‘leaking’ problem, but perhaps it is no longer a problem.

animal adaptations
Lesson Outline
Christopher learned about adaptations animals have to survive. He created his own original animal and then determined how that animal got his four basic needs (water, food, shelter, temperature regulation)met. With the help of leading questions, he came up with three adaptations the animal has to survive. He enjoyed making his own animal.

Lesson Comments
Christopher enjoyed creating his own 'tree animal'. He had some difficulty coming up with adaptations. Leading questions and encouragement helped him complete the activity.

Yanuell assisted in the care of the beta fish known as Blue-e, and the other fish known as Dots. We discussed how the plants in the tank help create a habitat through which nitrogen can cycle, from the fish waste, into the plants and released as a gas, out of the aquatic system. We discussed how to care for the fish, and as the caretaker, it was very important it is to him to be mindful of the fish, and its habitat. Assignment: Care for the fish. When we were finished with the fish, we returned our attention to waves, and Yanuell drew a diagram of a wave, and was shown where the crest and trough of the wave are located. I also showed him just how a wave length is measured or wave height is determined.

Energy waves -
After reminding ourselves of the definition of matter, Yanuell was tasked with identifying things that have no matter. He included energy, so we explored how energy moves in waves. We determined that sound waves travel on air molecules, and electric energy travels on molecules of metal, through a cord we connect to the outlet. We also determined that ocean waves needed water, and seismic waves need earth to happen. The only energy that does not require the presence of something that has mass and takes up space is light. Light travels through space, which is mostly absent of any matter. We then examined the different wavelengths by which light can travel. We also noted which wavelengths are not capable of penetrating the Earth’s atmosphere.
