Solid, liquid, gas -
For our last class, Jayne and I explored the differences between solid, liquid, and gas. We conducted an experiment by combining a solid (ice cream) and a liquid (root beer). Jayne was quick to notice the many new bubbles that formed and identify them as the presence of gas. We discussed how this gas was formed, while we enjoyed our Root Beer Floats.

Character traits
Lesson Outline
Today we talked about character traits. The difference between physical and personality traits. Are we born with some while others are learned? What is the difference? We each took a turn describing ourselves using characteristic traits.

building a cell
Lesson Outline
Charlie did the planning phase of building his cell today. He made a final decision he wanted to make a cell cake and chose the color of the icing and the flavor and shape of the cake. We went through each organelle and he decided what items he wanted to use to represent each one. He also decided what to use for the cell membrane and the cell wall. He will make his cell on Wednesday.

Animalia revisited -
Jayne wanted to re-examine the book Animalia. I agreed, but this time we needed to search for all the items she could identify, starting with the relevant letter. She began with the letter A. I asked her what some items in the picture were, reminding her they all start with the letter A. She found several items, and I found a few others, before we progressed to the letter B. We worked our way through the alphabet, both learning new words for each letter.

cells and organelle functions
Lesson Outline
Charlie continued learning about cells and the cell organelle functions today. He drew a cell on the board and added the organelles into the cell. He also played a cell game online where he matched up the names of the organelles with their functions. He took a quiz on the organelles in plant and animals cells and scored 100%.

cell organelles and functions
Lesson Outline
Charlie continued working on the function of the cell organelles today. He watched a cell video by the Amoeba Sisters on the different organelles and how they work inside the cell. We also went over pictures and definitions of each organelle in a plant and animal cell. He labeled a diagram of a plant and animal cell.

The Water Hole -

Science Enrichment:
The Water Hole -
Jayne and I continued reading the Graham Base book: The Water Hole. The story tells of an increasing number (from one to ten) of animals seeking water at the local water hole. Each page sets the water hole in a different continent or ecosystem. Each image includes a list of animals hidden in the artwork; all indigenous species to the represented continent. As we progressed through the numbers, the water hole is shrinking! When the water hole was gone, Jayne was tasked with finding several extinct animals hidden in the image. But the rain refreshed the waterhole, and we were tasked with finding our hosts, hidden in an image of all the previously hidden animals.

Lesson Outline
Charlie continued to work on cells today. We reviewed cell theory and went over the organelles in an animal and plant cell looking at a diagram of each. He did a vocabulary matching activity where he matched different pictures of organelles to their definition and then glued them into his science notebook. We also discussed making a cell and he came up with a lot of creative ideas but he really liked the idea of making an edible cell out of cake. We will research this further next week.

Lesson Outline
Charlie did an overview of cells today. He watched a Brain Pop video on both plant and animal cells and the differences in each. He looked at a diagram of a plant and animal cell and discussed organelles and their functions in the cell. We also discussed cell theory and the three main ideas (1) all living things are made of one or more cells (2) the cell is the basic unit of life in which all activities occur (3) all cells come from cells that already exist.
