Gracyn's lesson consisted of modeling and recording 2-digit subtraction. She solved problems with multiple steps. First, drawing quick pictures to represent the tens and ones, then determining if she needed to regroup, and finally subtracting the ones and tens place. She also read through word problem vocabulary to determine which function was needed to solve.
Today we drew a person and labeled her body parts in order to be ready to sing the head-shoulders-knees and toes song. We sang that song many times together. We had so much fun.
Gracyn solved problems that involved subtracting a double-digit from another double-digit. She broke apart the number into tens and ones and subtracted the tens first before subtracting the remaining ones. Then, she read through a variety of word problems focusing on the vocabulary to determine addition or subtraction before solving.
Gracyn and I read and discussed the next several pages of our 'Just Grace' story. She practiced spelling words with cvc and cvce patterns in word and sentence formats. For guided reading she read a level J book on Raz-Kids, great job!
We practiced addition and subtraction with 3 and 4 digit numbers. I introduced the concept of "borrowing" when subtracting by hand. Then, we did some practice games online.
Today, Gracyn continued breaking apart a single-digit and using the number line to subtract from a double-digit. She solved many correlating problems and grasped the concept. Before moving to the next lesson, we practiced subtracting 10 from any given number. I typed in two and three digit numbers and Gracyn typed in the number minus 10. This practice prepared her for the next lesson that we began today, subtracting a double-digit from another double-digit. Gracyn broke apart the number and first subtracted the tens before subtracting the remaining ones.
Gracyn took the end of unit test today on plant and animal needs and scored an 83%. She also began a new unit on oceans today. We read about the octopus and she learned facts such as the octopus has no bones, changes colors, eats shrimp, fish, and crabs, and shoots out black ink when it's threatened by a predator. She learned three new vocabulary words relating to the octopus (shallow, suction, and black ink) and answered comprehension questions about the facts she learned. She also watched a short video on the life of an octopus.
"I Love Yoga" book; "The Great Big Body Book", gymnastics, upside-down tree pose
Lesson Outline
Today we used the projector as we Skyped to go through two new yoga/body books. The body book talked about all the parts of the body, healthy eating, and body movements. The yoga book showed us some more difficult poses and reviewed many we have done. Gracyn also wanted to practice her gymnastics, primarily the handstand. We saw a picture of a difficult variation of the handstand that she tried. She also did the "upside-down tree" pose against the wall.
Gracyn's lesson today consisted of a review on the names of the lines and spaces on a written staff. We then reviewed the symbols for the treble and bass clef; whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes; and the corresponding rests for each note.
