In math today, we worked on Topic 17, Lesson 2 “Fact Families”. Gracyn was excited to use her new dice set to generate two sets of fact families on the opening page of the lesson.
We then worked through the Guided Practice and Independent Practice sections in which we discussed and completed problems involving looking at the whole and it’s two parts to create the two addition facts and related subtraction facts to complete the fact family. Finally, we read and completed the problem solving work on the back page. This lesson increased in complexity by reversing the sequence of the addition and subtraction sentences (i.e. 11 = 3 + 8, in which they had the sum written first). We discussed that we need each side of the = sign to be the same value.
Additionally, we watched a Brain Pop Jr. learning video on the “Calendar”. We reviewed the “Days of the Week” song as well as the “Months of the Year” song. We watched and discussed topics including how people use the calendar for marking important dates, before and after with days and months, and ways to write the date. Gracyn completed her first timed math drill in her new workbook, “More Minute Math Drills – Addition & Subtraction”. She scored a 100% on her 25 problems of +1 in 1 minute, 45 seconds. We will continue to drill simple problems and increase in difficulty to aid in mastery and fluency in the execution of basic math facts. In closing, we read the first half of a fun storybook entitled, "If I Were a Plus Sign" by
Trisha Speed Shaskan. The book utilized characters in a story format to explain a bit more about addition. For example, it showed how the word "and" can be used to indicate addition. We also saw how the addends in an addition sentence can be flipped, as well as problems can be written vertically or horizontally.
SKYPE yoga: "Go Noodle" exercise program online; jump rope, back, leg and arm movements
Lesson Outline
Gracyn requested that we do the "Go Noodle" exercise program today. It turned out to be quite an aerobic workout and a practice of some yoga poses, including warriors and squats. We did active movement, dance and poses in various exercise games. Gracyn also used her new jump rope and I showed her how to "double" jump. We ended class with rag doll and monkey hang to release the lower back.
Gracyn wrote her spelling words once each today. After we did her morning work and free writing. We talked about compound words and did a cute spring worksheet where she had to match words to make compound words. Today she read a level E Raz Kids story "Bear and Kangaroo". I didn't tell her what level the story was. She read the story beautifully using expression! I was so proud of her. I told her after that it was a level E...She couldn't believe how easy it was! I said it is because it is your level! Next we watched a video on river animals.
Today we read a story booklet about “Arbor Day”, which was nationally celebrated last Friday. We read of the origin of the holiday, how it’s celebrated currently, and how trees help us. We discussed why holidays such as “Arbor Day” and “Earth Day” were created and why they are significant to people and the nation as a whole.
We began Topic 17 today, “Subtraction Facts to 18”. We worked through the introduction activities together which involved “Review What You Know” problems. We also read and discussed the “My New Math Words”, which focused on “related facts” and “fact family”. We then moved on to Lesson 17-1, “Using Related Facts”. We began the lesson with generating our own addition sentence and then writing the applicable subtraction sentence using the same numbers. We then worked through the Guided Practice and Independent Practice sections in which we discussed and completed problems in which we looked at the whole and its two parts to create the addition fact and related subtraction fact. Finally, we read and completed the problem solving work on the back page. This included a word problem which required Gracyn to take the information given and generate the appropriate addition and subtraction sentences.
Today Gracyn's lesson was on using the calendar. We went over how many days in a month. How many weeks in a year. How many months in a year. We went over the days of the week. Gracyn got to picked her favorite day of the week and drew a picture to show what she does on that day. Gracyn picked Saturday and drew a picture of her playing softball.
Today Gracyn was introduced to her new spelling words. They are mostly words from the -am and -ack word families with the bonus word "pretty". She wrote each word once. We completed her morning work together and in writing she wrote two strong sentences about her new doll Samantha that she got over the weekend. I was excited that she chose to use the word pretty in one of her sentences! We completed some more alphabetic order worksheets. The first one she had to write the letter that came before and after different letters in the alphabet. For example, D comes before E and F comes after E. We had fun timing ourselves to see how fast we could figure it out. Next we completed a spring ABC order sheet. She first wrote out the alphabet. Then we underlined the first letter in each word. Next she went down the alphabet to find the correct order for each word. We did a cute spring digraph worksheet. She had to cut and paste the beginning blend to words like "flower", "frog", and "storm". In reading she read aloud a level D Raz Kids story about a Teddy Bear. She answered the comprehension questions correctly. She read the story fluently and tomorrow we will start to really focus on level E books.
Today Gracyn watched an animated video on Daniel and the Lions Den. She asked a lot of questions throughout the movie. She saw how God took care of Daniel for being faithful.
Today Gracyn began her day with her morning work. Then we worked on a fun sentence puzzle worksheet. We had to piece together the order of the words to make a sentence. Gracyn knew right away to look at the word with a capital letter to know which word was first. The next worksheet we did was putting words into abc order. Gracyn first wrote the alphabet on her sheet. Then she underlined the first letter in each word. We went through the alphabet and looked for words that started with that letter. When we got to words that both started with the same letter she circled the second letter and then we looked at her alphabet list to see which was first. She did great with this! Next she read aloud a level D Raz Kids book on frogs. She answered the questions and did great! Gracyn had just gotten a jump rope and a hula hoop the day before. We watched really cool videos of jump roping and hula hooping. She got up and performed! She is doing so well with the hula hoop!
