Closed Syllables -- Step 2
Lesson Outline
The session began with the introduction of the closed syllable. The rules for this type of syllable were given and several words were written by Samantha to reinforce the concept. Digraphs were then reviewed. The next set of words Samantha will work on include blends. Samantha read several closed syllable words that had blends and/or digraphs -- both real and nonsense words were included. She will continue to work on this concept for the next lesson.

practice for yoga/dance performance; puffy paint yoga project
Lesson Outline
We went over several yoga poses that Sam can incorporate into her yoga/dance performance next Tues. New poses: reverse prayer hands, variations of tree pose, half bow pose and triangle. The second part of class Sam requested that we make puffy paint yoga figures to put up on the glass windows. We printed out small yoga figures and filled them with puffy paint. We painted Santa hats on them for the holiday. When they dry, we will peel off the paper and display. I brought in yoga cookies for my students today.

Science:
Invertebrates -
We started our lesson with Samantha telling me what she had learned about Sweden, and then investigating the specifics of the Santa Lucia holiday. We then looked into what scientific achievements are associated with Sweden, and discovered that the most prestigious award for science, and contributions to society, originate in Sweden; the Nobel prizes. Samantha wanted to know if an actor had ever won the Nobel prize. We investigated and discovered that, for one, the award for literature was awarded to George Bernard Shaw, who also won an Oscar, and two Harold Pinter, who wrote and acted in many great movies. There may be more. We then used the second half of our class to finish our invertebrate project. Sam used some images she had found in the magazine on Monday, and pasted them in the correct phylum, until each group had at least two members. Homework: Samantha was told to study her lists, and be ready for a quiz on Thursday.

Step 2.1
Lesson Outline
The session began with a review of sounds. Samantha fluently read the words that were created using the magnetic tiles. She read the step 2.1 word cards (real and nonsense). For charting, Samantha read 14/15 real words and 14/15 nonsense words correctly. The real words for today's session had the suffix s on each word. Several sentences were fluently read by Samantha. For spelling practice, Samantha used the magnetic tiles to identify the correct letter(s) from dictation and then spelled the words that were given. On the written portion of the lesson, Samantha spelled 6/6 real words and 2/4 nonsense words correctly. The nonsense words she misspelled were quink and quang. She did an excellent job on the sentence dictation. For the final part of the lesson Samantha practiced spelling some sight words.

Lesson Comments
Sam was ebullient today and alternately stood on top of her chair and played with her legos while I read aloud and asked her questions. She was able to correctly answer all of the summarizing and drawing inference questions as we went along. Impressive.
