Middle Ages Cutlure
Lesson Outline
Today we reviewed feudalism as an economic and cultural system. We analyzed an interactive that detailed the mechanisms used to break through a castle in a medieval war. Next, we read from the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. We discussed the different characters and how they represented the roles acted out by people in the middle ages. We discussed the switch from paganism to Christianity and specifically Charles Martel's win at the Battle of Tours against the Muslims, and the way that was viewed as a victory for Christianity as a whole.

Organization of the Body -
We continued the unit on the human body. Aubrey was given text to read about the organization of the human body. We then watched videos associated with lesson. She was then asked questions about what she had read, and we discussed her answers. She was then tested on the subject. She was then given text to read about cell differentiation. She found the section on stem cells confusing, so we watched a Bill Nye the Science guy explaining how cells determine what function they will perform. We worked on the discussion questions together.

Flowers for Algernon
Lesson Outline
Aubrey caught up on her reading of Flowers for Algernon. We then talked about what was going on in the story so far, particularly Charlie overhearing the argument between Professor Nemur and Dr. Strauss about Dr. Strauss's misgivings regarding the experiment. For her writing exercise, Aubrey looked up the literary definition of allusion, identified the Biblical allusions in the story, and wrote about what it means in the story.

Lesson Comments
Aubrey is definitely trying hard in class, but is having a hard time with remembering what she just read, which limits discussion. When it comes to writing, she has become very dependent on me leading her rather than trying to explain an idea herself, mostly because she does not seem able to remember enough specifics about the story to formulate an answer.
