We used the isomers of butane, pentane, and octane to show that branching on an alkane chain reduces the boiling point. We studied the graph and found that it was not linear, but predictable. We then analyzed an advertisement for a hybrid car which made claims about reducing the carbon footprint.

Paige worked on this assignment as a combination of algebra 2 and chemistry. She is making progress in both subjects.
Part of Paige's assignment was to graph the number of carbon atoms in an alkane vs boiling points. After graphing, Paige followed provided guidelines to construct a line of best fit. She then answered questions based on the graph. We also answered some other questions about the structure and intermolecular forces between carbohydrates.

Paige was able to construct the graph and best fit line on her own. She needed some help with the questions but was able to follow my explanations of the answers.
Paige and I worked on problems provided online by her teacher. I showed her the basic attack plan for doing both types of problems. There were also ratio and proportion problems.

Lesson Comments
Paige quickly adapts to new problem solving strategies. By showing her the basic plans of attack for each type of problems, I am preparing her to independently solve these problems and to also do better on the SAT which features these types of problems.
Distillation, carbon footprints, and naming compounds
Lesson Outline
Paige worked on an assignment from her teacher about distillation, carbon footprints, and naming compounds. She needed a lot of help with naming compounds and writing formulas from compound names.

Paige worked hard on her assignment. She is a very quick and able student.
Isolating variables, setting up and solving word problems
Lesson Outline
Paige worked on isolating variables and solving word problems dealing with proportions, work, time and distance. She is receiving and sending her homework assignments from her school online.

Lesson Comments
Paige is a very able and hard working student. She has little difficulty with the problems she has been assigned. I mentioned that many of the problems she was working on are good practice for the SAT.
Great progress! Paige decided on a topic: Fire and Warmth imagery. We identified relevant passages and made some initial drafts of a thesis question and statement.
