We ant over some area problems that Paige had completed for homework. Then we discussed special right triangles--30-60-90 and 45-45-90 degree triangles. I gave here a memory "hook" for keeping the formulas straight: TWO congruent angles means square root of TWO. THREE different angles means square root of THREE.

Paige is a very peasant young lady. "Now I get it!" she said.
We continued to work on her assignment for this week. We went through finding area of a rhombus, kite and began area of a regular polygon. There were a few properties of the diagonals of a rhombus that we went over, as well as finding the perimeter and apothem of a regular polygon.
We reviewed the Greek story of creation, then read the myth of Eros and Psyche, and Orpheus and Eurydice. We recapped the stories to check for comprehension and Paige wrote summaries on each.

Lesson Comments
Paige's comprehension of the stories seemed better today.
Paige performed an interpretative reading of a piece called "Free Activity Period". I graded her based on the rubric provided by her teacher. We then discussed speech writing; pathos, logos, and ethos; establishing credibility, connecting with the audience, and using a refrain to increase persuasiveness. I then asked Paige to write an intriguing intro and establishing paragraph.

Lesson Comments
Paige's interpretative reading assignment was a bit confusing. She asked me to grade her, but it was unclear whether she had actually prepared for the performance aspect of the speech as required by the rubric. Based on this rubric, her score came to a B-. She was pleased with this, but I felt she could have prepared better.

Science:
Chromosomes and DNA -
Paige brought her chromosome assignment and we worked the activity together. She compared bullet markings and found the one that matched the sample ‘crime scene’ bullet. She then was directed to compare strands of DNA, from a Chimpanzee, a Gorilla, an Orangutan and a Human. She answered several questions and wrote an opinion on whether Chimpanzees should be included in the taxonomic Family Hominid, which currently has only one member (Humans). She completed the activity and the worksheet within the class time.
We completed half of her homework that is due next week. We went through area formulas and calculations for triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, rhombus's and kites.
This lesson centered on the Greek Mythology of how the world and mankind were created. We read about and discussed, the children of heaven and earth, the Titans, and the War between the Gods and Titans, including the roles of Prometheus, Epimetheus and Pandora.

Lesson Comments
Paige feels very challenged by the reading. I am modeling reading this archaic style of text for her and encouraging her to read aloud.
We reviewed Paige's graded paper from last week and took note of ways to improve her next papers. Paige summarized the Acts, took notes, and answered questions about the characters within the Acts: the church, the holy spirit, and God's word.
