Sam has some experience with IXL, but has never completed the IXL Diagnostic. He continues to work at the diagnostic, narrowing down his skills, and he is pleased with his results as am I. We discovered and focused on his two recommended skills:ordering topics from broadest to narrowest, which we are reinforcing in his essay on plastic as well, and the grammar component of utilizing correct and appropriate shifts in pronoun number and persons, and possessives which we also focused on in a writing exercise chat. Sam is working on some sixth and seventh grade level grammar and mechanics, but his reading level is looking to be between 10th and 11th grade. As Sam completes his diagnostic, the score bands/ranges narrow down to pinpoint grade level. I assigned him practice in the skills recommended.

The Great Gatsby
Lesson Outline
Today we focused on Fitzgerald's portrayal of the rich as a careless corrupt social class by examining Gatsby's lavish party scene. We noted the continued use of color imagery, "gold and harlequin" , to describe the rich as both pretentious and ridiculous. Nina discussed Nick's moral contempt for the partygoers ,and we then studied the foreshadowing and symbolism in references to driving cars as Jordan Baker informs Nick that she can be as careless as she pleases when she drives as long as others remain careful. Likewise ,the car accident scene as drunken revelers depart the party reinforces the image of the rich as careless and callous - inflicting damage and accepting no responsibility for their actions. And ,of course, as Nina knows from the movie, at the end of the novel it is Daisy's careless driving that kills the lower class character, Myrtle Wilson. Nina further analyzed chinks in Gatsby's adopted persona as a wealthy old moneyed member of the elite society of Tom and Daisy.

Sam was ten minutes late but was participating 100% while he was in class. I asked him to turn his camera on, and he says it is, but it doesn't work. We read and discussed Of Mice and Men and the comprehension questions on the plot and the characters and some possible themes of the novella. We discussed Chapter One and started Chapter 2. Sam volunteered to read orally and did so with enthusiasm and magnificent handling of the "n-word."

The Great Gatsby
Lesson Outline
We explored the symbolism of both the "valley of ashes" and the brooding eyes in the billboard of Dr. Eckleburg that overlooks the valley of ashes. Nina did well in noting the representation of waste and corruption, and I pointed out the paradoxical metaphors that compare the piles of ashes to a farm, or a garden, reminiscent of the corrupted Eden theme that runs through the novel and much of American Literature. Similarly, we explored the representation of a deity in the brooding but ever observant faceless billboard of Dr.Eckleburg. We then analyzed the issues of social class first noting how Nick, the narrator , is both within and without elite society and contrasting the social status of Tom Buchanan with that of his unsophisticated mistress, Myrtle Wilson. We examined how Tom feels entitled to have a mistress and yet claim to be a moral character . Fitzgerald observed the rich are not like us. They have their own rules.

Sam spent the first 5 minutes of class on the phone with his doctor. He worked well for the remainder of the class, tweaking his outline on plastic and reviewing the 3 sources. I demonstrated the Read Think Look Up technique for locking in the learning and practice with public speaking. Sam will need to practice this to cement his retention of key facts. He is to complete his paragraph for homework. He was not feeling well, but was engaged in the learning.
