Will filled out a template describing the physical appearances of the characters and their character traits. We discussed his written responses to the three essential questions he wrote about in class and completed for homework. He did an awesome job on this assignment and had some insightful responses. Will is going to complete the character template for Jack, answer comprehension questions for Chapter One and read Chapter Two for homework.

Essential questions for our Novel study
Lesson Outline
Today in class, Will worked on the second essential question, “What makes a society functional?”. He brainstormed some key points using his background knowledge. Will was able to identify some significant needs for a society to be functional including: tolerance, rules, leaders, and respect. He composed an excellent written response independently. Next, he worked on the third essential question regarding order and chaos. For homework, he will finish his response as to what the relationship is between order and chaos in society. British Literature / Composition
Lesson Outline
Continuing chronologically through the major writers of British Literature, Natalie studied Rudyard Kipling whose book, "The Jungle Book," she had recently read. She wrote a good in-class essay on the book. The remainder of class time was spent getting a start on a take-home exam covering the first half of "The Heart of Darkness." Natalie is also working at home on an argumentative research essay using pages copied on exactly how to do this from the college 1101 textbook that we looked over together a couple of weeks ago. She has these pages to keep as a good resource for future writing on any level in any subject.

Heart of Darkness
Lesson Outline
Natalie is continuing to read The Heart of Darkness, using literary helps that I have provided in a workbook. As there was no production of materials from Natalie yet, I requested she read a bit more to a good stopping place, and the write a paragraph summary in which she explained the main points of the first portion. Next week we will look at some of her completed workbook materials, and I will do some of the close reading pages with her to move us forward a bit more quickly. Natalie should try to finish, or read a good deal of, this book before next week. I plan to give her a take-home test once finished.

Essential Questions - Good vs Evil
Lesson Outline
Today, Will reviewed the obituary for William Golding to try and determine what Golding’s viewpoint would be on the essential question as to whether human beings are essential good or evil. Will shared good examples from the text that supported his belief that Golding would have had mixed views on this question due to his experiences in World War II and his experiences working with students. Next, we reviewed a list of 6 key questions about human nature. Will, decided that man was inherently good and wrote a short paragraph defending his viewpoint. We had great discussions today, and Will was able to relate some of his learnings from Jujitsu to our discussion on internal conflict. For homework, Will should read chapter 1 in “Lord of the Flies”. Also, he should write a paragraph response to the question of what makes a society functional or dysfunctional.
