Cabo began the session with the continuation of his compare and contrast essay. I had him edit his writing for a strong quote that hooks the reader in the opening paragraph and making sure his writing transitions clearly from the quote to his stated thesis. He also edited for extraneous information that strayed from his thesis. He went back to replace simplistic diction with vivid adjectives and adverbs that clearly indicate to the reader what he is trying to convey. He then read, analyzed, and discussed two chapters of A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Macbeth Act I
Lesson Outline
Lady Macbeth remains an iconic literary figure by breaking gender role models prevalent in 1606. We first discussed stereotypical 17th Century female gender behavior , and noted how Shakespeare ties that gender role to the metaphor of "milk of human kindness" biologically tied to a woman's breastfeeding. By contrast, it is Macbeth who is portrayed in Act I as the passive character who awaits "Fate" or chance to make him king. We analyzed Macbeth's long soliloquy wherein he articulates the many rational arguments against regicide and himself concludes that the only motivation "spurring " him forward is unchecked "ambition." We continue to highlight language repeating the reality vs appearance motif, and last examined how Lady Macbeth verbally emasculates Macbeth in an effort to convince him to "be a man" and murder the king as if this act were somehow fated and beyond their control. Macbeth Act I
Lesson Outline
We studied the recurring use of paradox to illustrate the theme of appearance vs reality as demonstrated in Shakespeare's language in Act I. Matthew did very well in identifying these techniques in the speeches of Macbeth and Duncan . In that regard, we noted the ongoing use of dramatic irony as Macbeth "appears " to be a loyalist but in reality is plotting to murder Duncan. We further studied the use of metaphor as Macbeth describes Malcolm as " a step" he must leap over or fall upon. Last, I introduced and defended the literary term "synecdoche" , and pointed out examples in Macbeth's soliloquy wherein he instructs "the eye" to wink at what "the hand" is doing.
