Relate back to the passage read earlier. Discuss what the theme/s are for it. Begin to construct a summary based on the main idea of the passage using the organizer we have worked with.
Nico learned how to compare and contrast two different topics in a Venn diagram, and how to write a haiku. He compared and contrasted video games and basketball, and wrote a haiku about basketball.
Nico learned how to write a news report today. He learned how to write a headline, byline, and answer the 5 W's. He wrote a full page story about finding a zombie on the beach. He focused on capital letters, punctuation, spelling, contractions and proofreading.
Nico worked on having neat handwriting today. He practiced writing his capital and lower case letters more neatly, with the capitals big and the lower case small. He used these skills, as well as his punctuation, grammar and capitalization skills, to write a journal entry. He ordered the actions of the story "The Crow and the Water Pitcher", and he rewrote this story, adding details to make it more interesting.
Nico created a 5W's chart and main idea/key detail wheel and filled them in with information on specific topics. He practiced his handwriting skills: writing each letter on the blue line and writing the tail of p, y, g and q under the blue line.
Nico learned how to cluster ideas for a paper. He drew an idea cluster chart with a main idea, key details and supporting details. He wrote a 5-paragraph essay using this strategy.
Nico wrote a 5 paragraph essay: introduction, three key detail paragraphs, and a conclusion. He proofread it and wrote a second draft. He practiced his spelling words.
Nico practiced his spelling words: catch, fudge, vacation, mansion, capture, television. He wrote an essay on why school is like jail (his topic choice). We worked on introduction paragraph including a topic sentence and three key detail sentences. He wrote a paragraph for each key detail sentence.
Review the articles he read in class from the day before. Talk about how each has a different point of view on a topic. Practice using each one to create a counter argument to one of two statements (for or against) based on the articles.
