I was delighted that Ayden did his homework over the weekend. He verbally summarized the chapter and he completed several short-answer questions via Google Docs. I introduced 5 new vocabulary words gleaned from Chapter 11. Ayden looked up the definitions and together we derived student-friendly versions. We co-read Chapter 11.
Ayden did not do his homework. We co-read Chapter 9 of Ready, Player, One. The characters are well developed at this point, and the quest to find the "Easter egg" in the video game and win the founder's fortune has begun in earnest. A theme that is emerging is that of identity. You can create your identity in a virtual world, changing your physical appearance, age, and even gender. What does this mean for society? How could this be good? Or bad?
Ayden did not do his homework because he wasn't feeling well last night. To begin, he wrote a sentence for each vocabulary word. He previewed the short answer questions for Chapter 8, and then we co-read the chapter, pausing peridically for Ayden to answer the questions.
I explained to Ayden that he will be held accountable for not doing his homework; if he doesn't do it, he gets a zero. Furthermore, we will get through much less material if he isn't reading outside of the classroom.
Ayden failed to do his homework last night; we worked on it together in class. Ayden looked up the definitions of the vocabulary words from Chapter 6. I helped him re-word them into more accessible language. He read the sentences from the book with the words to help put the definitions into context. I emphasized the parts of speech. Next, we co-read Chapter 7, and Ayden wrote answers to the short essay questions I had prepared.

Ayden was a little under the weather, coughing and sneezing. I wouldn't expect to see him back in school this week.
I began by introducing five vocabulary words drawn from Chapter 6 of the novel Ready Player One. Ayden's homework is to look up the definitions, paying particular attention to the part of speech. I included the page number where each word is found and encouraged Ayden to read the sentence for context.
I prepared five short answer questions covering Chapters 1-5. Ayden used Google Docs to complete the questions in class; we discussed as he wrote. We co-read Chapter 6, in part using LearningAlly to confirm that the update Ayden installed worked (it did.)
First, Ayden took his vocabulary quiz. He got 78%. He had not done his reading homework, so I asked him to use LearningAlly and read it in class. This process was illuminating, in that, I didn't realize that LearningAlly was so glitchy. I instructed Ayden to update his settings and text his mom to get the Audible version if that didn't solve it. I can understand why Ayden was frustrated. To conclude, we discussed the virtual world of the book and how it relates to our current lives, with so much time spent in front of screens and people's ability to obscure their true identities.

It is frustrating that Ayden doesnt do his homework. I spoke with his mom and she want him to have homework (his siblings have 30-40 minutes per subject per night) and she wants me to give him consequences (bad grades) which I can do.
Ayden did not do his homework, so the first 15 minutes of class were dedicated to making a Quizlet and studying the vocabulary list for tomorrow's quiz. Next, he wrote several sentences for today's writing prompt, "What is an Easter Egg in a video game?" We edited the sentences for coherent structure, spelling, and punctuation. We co-read Chapter 4.

I can't get Ayden to do his homework. Denise texted me today, asking to speak with me tomorrow. I don't know what she wants to talk about, but I will broach the topic of homework.
We began by co-reading Chapter 3. We discussed the setting and character development. Ayden's homework is to read/listen to the next chapter.
Next, we reviewed the vocabulary list that we are building. Ayden's homework is to create a Quizlet for the list. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Thursday.
I began class with the following writing prompt: "In two or three sentences, describe Fortnite. What is the setting? What is the objective of the game." Ayden wrote two sentences; we edited them for spelling and subject/verb agreement. Next, we reviewed the vocabulary list. Yesterday's sentence writing led me to believe that Ayden struggles to identify whether the list's words are nouns, verbs, or adjectives. We spent some time identifying the part of speech of each.
I am pleased to report that Ayden did his homework and read Chapter 1. He summarized what happened, and we discussed the point of view and tone. We co-read Chapter 2.

We had momemtum so I stayed with English 11 for the duration of the session. I find that if I get Ayden interested in a book I will have his attention, and as you know, it takes a few chapters to get into a book. I will say that this is the perfect book for Ayden, and prescient of our times. It was recommended by Atlanta Visker, who I talked to today. I think that eventually she will be interested in working at Batt. Right now, her husband's business is in transition, one of her boys is home, and she is feeling overwhelmed (and a little burned out from Turtle River.). I will keep talking to her.
Ayden did not do his homework, so in lieu of a writing prompt, he wrote his vocabulary sentences with me in class. Next, we co-read the novel, focusing on the writer's tone. I think this book is fantastic.
His homework is to finish the chapter, page 16-29.
Assignment
finish the chapter from Chutzpah, either with the book or Audible
