Elevated Vocabulary - Transitions, Conjunctions and Prepositional Locutions
Lesson Outline
Today, Lilly and I used Quizlet flashcards to review transitions, conjunctions and prepositional locutions, expressions that allow her to elevate her French to a more sophisticated register. After exploring the flashcards, we completed a worksheet to reinforce her understanding of the difference between transitions and conjunctions as well as solidify her vocabulary knowledge. Thereafter, we did a matching exercise with the same expressions and created original sentences once the pairs were made. We closed with one final flashcard review of the same vocabulary and some short conversation in French.
Assignment
Lilly should continue to study the transition, conjunction and prepositional locution vocabulary.

Lesson Comments
As we were studying and utilizing the vocabulary together, it became evident that Lilly can absorb the expressions well; she just has to put the time in outside of our sessions to study and utilize the vocabulary as often as possible via her writing tasks, presentations and conversations. She has a very limited foundation in French, so I hope to spend the coming months filling in the multiple gaps that there are. She requested that we review the passe compose today, but we will begin with the present tense next week and then build from there through multiple tenses/moods and other fundamental grammar topics.

IB Exam Speaking Practice
Lesson Outline
Today, Lilly had to prepare a speaking presentation for tomorrow in her IB class. She had to select an image related to health and well-being (a theme of the IB exam), describe how it relates to health and then tie it back to a French-speaking country. Together, we selected an image related to Quebec, a region of interest to Lilly. We decided that universal healthcare coverage could be an interesting topic and therefore began to generate a vocabulary list related to that. With that vocabulary in hand, Lilly began to describe the image and practiced using more elevated vocabulary to discuss the controversial nature of universal healthcare. On Quizlet, we created a health glossary for her to continue to expand both in and outside class.
Assignment
Lilly must practice her presentation for tomorrow and continue to add to her Quizlet glossary as she discovers vocabulary related to the topic that she must research.

Lesson Comments
I enjoyed working with Lilly today. She started to come out of her shell a little bit and when she was nervous about practicing her presentation in front of me, I impressed upon her how much I am just here to help her, never to judge. Lilly has a very weak vocabulary, so we discussed that it would be best for me to almost teach her French from scratch over the course of our time together so that she can develop a solid foundation.

IB Exam Format and Skill-Building/Elevated Vocabulary
Lesson Outline
During our first meeting, Lilly described her struggles with French and provided some background on her previous French courses. Together, we discussed the format of the IB exam and each language skill that is activated via each task. I underscored the importance of continually building those skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) through consistent and daily practice; I shared various ways (Quizlet, YouTube, Netflix shows and movies, vocabulary applications, podcasts, etc.) in which she could practice. Thereafter, we engaged in a short conversation about Lilly's family to activate her speaking skills and give me an opportunity to gauge her vocabulary and speaking abilities. Finally, we explored a wealth of vocabulary pertaining to transitions, conjunctions and locutions that will help set herself apart from her peers on the exam and allow her to elevate her register to a more sophisticated level.
Assignment
Lilly is to explore and practice the transitions/conjunctions vocabulary using the Quizlet link I shared with her.

Lesson Comments
Due to the pandemic, virtual learning and difficulties last year, Lilly has a very weak foundation in French at this point. She lacks very basic vocabulary and struggles to form complete sentences; she was unable to describe her family members, express her likes/dislikes or say the names of her pets. She could hardly understand me when I was speaking and conversation was therefore very difficult. While I provided her with elevated vocabulary to practice for next week, I fear I might have to scale everything back and start from the beginning with her, filling in the many gaps in knowledge that she has. Next week, I might explore basic regular and irregular verbs in the present tense as well as adjectives. I honestly have no idea how she is managing to stay afloat in her IB course at this time. I have been in touch with her teacher about this, but I am very concerned.

Fun French Friday
Lesson Outline
Sebastian clearly had a blast this last day of program this year. There were fun activities planned, so after playing outside at recess, he participated in an ice cream sundae party. After that indulgence, I encouraged Sebastian to practice a drum solo for the talent portion of the day, and without hesitation, he improvised awesomely. Hoping for a safe and enjoyable summer for all. I look forward to seeing Sebastian in the fall!

Ordering in French
Lesson Outline
Sebastian learned that to order food, he can simply use the indefinite article 'un' (masculine) or 'une' (feminine) + the item. For example, If he were ordering a cheeseburger, he could say "Un cheeseburger,'and add please at the end. Sebastian enjoyed ordering a specialty sundae on this fun Friday to end his session with me.

Today, Sebastian was asked to finish a reel showing a compilation of his best work. His film teacher, Ms. Marsha, requested that he finish the final 45 seconds of it during my class, so we used half our session for Sebastian to complete his assignment. He is to share it with his mother this evening. We then worked on Duo Lingo for the second half of our session. Sebastian was given exercises which enlisted his listening skills to answer multiple choice questions. These lessons help him practice his understanding and speaking of French. We worked on greetings today, which reinforced and consolidated recently acquired skills from prior lessons.

I was asked to sub for Sebastian today, Friday, 5/14/21, from 12:30-1:30, having been taken off Santino, with whom I was originally scheduled. I was informed of this change at 10:15AM. Ms. Marsha, his film teacher, beeseched me to have Sebastian finish his project (reel) in my class (in front of mom, as well). I agreed to work on it for half the session.

Greetings and pleasantries - formal and informal
Lesson Outline
We reviewed prior learning at the onset of our session. We reviewed common conversational ways to greet someone and exchange pleasantries. I explained formal vs. informal language codes, and we learned the most common formal and informal greetings in the French language. We practiced using nasal sounds in the pronunciation of certain words; the general rule is that when the consonant 'n' or 'm' appears after a vowel, the pronunciation of that word is nasal. We used the words 'bonjour' and Monsieur as examples as the former is pronounced 'Bo-(n:silent)-jour, and the latter "Mo-(n:silent)-sieur. We finished our academic session listening and repeating French pronunciation and spent the final 5 minutes playing a fun game of corn hole on this fun Friday afternoon.
