Bella read today about F. Nightengale and the Crimean war. We discussed how this war resembled some of the current day events.
We pointed out the vocabulary that she will be tested on this week in her verb test. We pointed out words that we have seen in prior readings.
We then prepped Bella for her individual readings. She was asked to choose a section of the text that interested her. She then read the section independently. She identified any unknown vocabulary and wrote it down. She will translate these words on her own.
Bella read from a different source about Florence today.
We talked about the similarities and differences in the sources. For instance, today's focused more on the mathematical knowledge that she had and applied.
Also, we went over words that Bella should have internalized by this point such as enfermera (nurse), Britanica (British), and the like.
Matthew and I started the class with a discussion that was held primarily in Spanish on my part and English on his part.
We discussed golf and the Honda classic for approximately 10 minutes. Matthew demonstrated understanding of the words and phrases that I used. He was attentive and responsive. He continues to build his verbal communication skills.
Matthew then reviewed quickly for his test on Monday.
Then, we read from his supplemental text. His mental stamina when we approach a new text continues to improve.
He was given time to address unknown words and phrases.
He chose to add some details and edit some parts. He then added graphics to his project.
He studied the writing to make sure that he could produce something similar on his test.
He then attempted the other possible writing prompt for the test. He wrote about what he wants his friends and family to do when he goes to college. This subject of course triggered the subjunctive.
Bella and I discussed her interests as a continuation of finding her engaging written Spanish material.
Learning of her aspirations to be a nurse, we read about Florence Nightengale. As we read, we discussed grammatical concepts from Spanish. As examples, she encountered the word "menor" which was covered in our lesson about comparatives, and she encountered the present, preterite, infinitive, and imperfect of "ser." We would discuss those conjugations as we read.
