In this activity, GT completed the section on quadratic, linear systems. The methods used were graphing and substitution. He did very well on both methods.
In this activity,GT focused on solving systems of equations created by quadratic and linear functions. Two methods were used graphing and substitution.
SAILING AROUND THE ROOM by Billy Collins and lecture notes
Lesson Outline
I presented GT with several literary/ poetry terms. We discussed each one. Some he already knew. He had questions about several of them. Several were new to him. We need to understand the terminology so that we can interpret the poetry. GT suggested the poetry unit. He is going to bring some of his songs in for us to interpret as poetry. Today we took two poems from Collins' collection and began to interpret them. GT did a good job and enjoyed the poetry.
GT and I did a basic overview of what economics is and why it's valuable to learn it. We talked about his experience in business courses, concepts he's familiar with, and created a syllabus to cover based on his interests and levels of understanding.
He shared what he learned in his Entrepreneurship class last year, and we talked about his personal interests when it comes to business and his career so we can cater the class to fit his needs best.
Next class, we'll begin learning about Supply and Demand.
GT spent the majority of the class independently reviewing the chapter. We spent the final portion of class reviewing the Democratic Party primary elections.

GT was shown the four top means by which mutations occur in strands of DNA: deletion, insertion/duplication, inversion, and translocation. We then watched a National Geographic program: ‘Genetic Mutations - Hidden Secrets’. This film described how mutations occur, some familiar mutations (conjoined twins, albinism, other birth defects) and some that have been beneficial to humans (the ability to digest milk or cooked meat). The film used Darwin’s finches, and the tortoises of the Galapagos Islands, to describe how natural selection is dependent on naturally occurring mutations. It examined how, 700 years ago, some individuals had a naturally occurring mutated gene that made them immune to the black plague, and how decedents of these lucky few have a similar immunity to HIV. The program continued, covering how genetic modification began centuries ago, and has given us wonders such as the wide variety of roses and dogs. The film was very comprehensive about the manner by which science has used genetic modification to find treatments and cures for diseases that afflict humankind. After the film, GT and I had a lengthy conversation about the coronavirus.
GT turned in his literary essay to be graded. Before he did we discussed his Works Cited page. He needed to make one formatting correction based on MLA requirements. The paper is extremely well-done. We then continued with the vocabulary lesson that we had begun yesterday. I introduced the next set of words. GT studied them and completed the application activities that followed. He did quite well. I briefly introduced the literary/poetry terms, but we ran out of time to really discuss them.
I first asked GT if he had any questions on the final requirements for his literary analysis due tomorrow for a grade. He said that he understood what was required. GT and I then decided to work further in his vocabulary series. We finished the three lesson review section. We discussed the section on roots and how understanding the meaning of roots can help you define unknown words that you may be reading. We then proceeded to begin a new lesson. I introduced the words. We studied them. We then began to complete the application exercises that follow.
