Class began with a review of the student handbook and a tour of the school. Next, we reviewed and discussed the course syllabus. Course expectations and requirements were highlighted. I am most impressed with GT. He is interested and manifests a high degree of intelligence.

GT is very impressive. I look forward to our time ahead.
This activity was in two parts. We first completed our work on solving quadratic and rational inequalities. Next we started our work on function tranformations.
With hurricane Dorian on the way, I took the opportunity to teach GT about hurricanes. It wasn't a biology lesson, but after a few questions I ascertained that he had little knowledge on the topic. This was a good physics review for him, as it involves the Law of Conservation of Energy, forces (especially pressure), and heat, and how all these factors come together to create a hurricane. We watched and discussed a couple of videos on hurricane formation. The thermographic images used in the videos led into a discussion on the energy levels of different colors of light.
GT wrote a first copy of a poem. The poem has a specific format on the topic of "Where I am From." He continued to work to build vocabulary. He used the context of the sentence to determine word meaning. Then he created synonyms and antonyms of the vocabulary words.
I introduced GT to the Sadlier Vocabulary series. I explained how the activities in the book work. I explained how the new vocabulary words will assist him in his future studies and are also good preparation for the ACT. We began the very first lesson. We explored the first few exercises together. GT did quite well.
It was my pleasure to meet GT today! First we made our introductions and told each other a little about ourselves before going over the syllabus. I gave him a hard copy of his vocab, but also sent links to the lists on quizlet, so I had GT set up a quizlet account and showed him how to use it to study the vocab. We then had a discussion about what science is, the difference between observation and inference, the limits of human observation (especially the tricks our brains can play on us!) and the methods and safeguards scientists use to help overcome these limitations.
In this activity, we determined intervals where f(x) is greater than zero and intervals where the function is less than zero. The functions used to determine these intervals where quadratic and rational.
GT and I completed a short Grammar pre-test on fragments, comma splices and run-on sentences. We did it interactively. I gave him immediate feedback as he completed each question. We also worked on his poem which he will complete and turn in to me on google. GT then shared some of his love for music. We looked at some of his original lyrics. We are going to revise them to be written with better line balance/division... GT is a very talented young man.
I introduced the "Where I Come From" poem by George Ella Lyon. We talked about her poem. I shared with GT my personal version of my "Where I come From." I played Alan Jackson's song"Where I Come From". GT began writing his own version of "Where I Come From." We will continue with the poem tomorrow. We talked about some novels that we could study. I talked about a few books, and GT chose THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME by Mark Haddon.
