We studied the text to locate metaphors and similes and , more importantly, to explore the significance of the comparisons. David did very well in analyzing the simile comparing Juana to an owl as previously in the novel Juana was described as the source of watchful reason . We further noted the metaphor directly comparing Kino to a machine noting how this comparison imparts Kino's loss of human morality as he in cold blood murders his trackers. We then studied the plot development wherein the baby ,Coyotito, is killed by gunfire. We explored the cost of Kino's obsession with pearl. Last, David astutely discussed the symbolic significance of Juana and Kino returning home ,this time marching side by side not with Juana trailing behind in a gesture of subservience. Had Kino heeded his wife , their son would not have been killed.
David came in at a 4/5 mood. He lost the Decades Book he'd been assigned to complete for homework so we are shifting our focus to finishing his graffiti project as quickly as possible instead. He rendered another building and shared that he still feels the project has a lot of work left. He told me it was his birthday yesterday—he turned 15 and plans to go ice skating to celebrate. He also enthusiastically shared information about go-karts.
David and I discussed aquatic ecosystems: freshwater and marine, the littoral zone, limnetic zone, profundal zone, intertidal zone, pelagic zone, photic zone, aphotic zone, abyssal zone and benthic zone. We examined the diagrams of each zone, the amount of sunlight each gets, and the organisms that live there.
The League of Nations and The United Nations. The establishment of the League of Nations after the Treaty of Versailles end of WW 1 as a peacekeeping organization. League of Nations did not include the U.S and many other powerful nations and was dissolved. The United Nations was established in 1945 following the surrender of Germany and Japan as an international peacekeeping organization and included the U.S. The U.N. improved upon the League of Nations with more member nations/states and better organizational structure.
