Today I provided instruction on literary archetypes. After defining the term ,we discussed Steinbeck's novel in the context of the "journey" archetype. David did well in identifying the critical plot events that represent Kino's journey .We then tied thematic ideas to the journey archetype discussing how the character encounters obstacles which alter the character's values. We further noted that Kino's wife becomes more assertive and Kino begins to recognize his wife's reasoning and values are superior to his. This led to a preliminary thematic interpretation of the novel : Love is more important than wealth.
David reviewed the terrestrial biomes: tundra, boreal forest, polar region, desert, tropical rainforest, tropical seasonal forest, temperate grassland, temperate forest, tropical savanna and temperate woodland and shrubland. He watched a Course Hero video on the terrestrial biomes.

David and I created the 6 cards that he did not get to create yesterday. He then went through 30 of his prior cards as a review. He was able to name 24 out of 30 cards accurately (about 80%.
Great job David.
David was especially distracted today. This week has been one of the first times in our class that he has been in danger of missing out on a serious amount of participation points. We discussed this and what he can do in the future.
We continued to study Steinbeck's use of symbolic setting and metaphor to emphasize theme . We first noted how as Kino escapes to the mountains he comments that he is trapped., We explored how the mountains represent the impediments of the social hierarchy that keeps the lower class from advancing. David then answered in writing three analytical questions. We reviewed his work and addressed how to edit his answers for clarity. HIs final product was very good,.
David and I read about and discussed terrestrial biomes: tundra, boreal forest, temperate forest, temperate dry forest and shrub land, temperate grassland, savanna, desert, tropical rainforest and polar region. He answered the lesson review questions.
Both David and I arrived 10 minutes late due to traffic. He immediately resumed work, pulling reference images of buildings to integrate into his letterforms. I demonstrated how to use a white fill layer with lowered opacity to support under-drawing. He focused on breaking down architectural reference into simpler shapes, especially windows.
