Weathering
Lesson Outline
Jonathan worked on his lesson about weathering by doing two brain pops. Jonathan studied the effects of wind on water and the effect of wind on mountains. He learned that mountains that are rounded became that way after thousands of years of sandblasting by the wind. Jonathan answered quetions about weathering caused by the expansion of ice. He studied the effect of plant roots breaking up solid rock into smaller pieces. Jonathan also learned the concepts of weathering due to rock slides and glaciers. Jonathan answered the advanced questions in the Brain Pop where there are several true answers to choose. Jonathan also reviewed sinkholes and we introduced the concept of carbonic acid and its effect on sedimetary rock forming caves. We wil begin studying caves and eclipses in the next few lessons.

Various language arts
Lesson Outline
We did it! We have completed Jonathan’s Ready Classroom textbook. We worked through the unit 6 check which assessed Jonathan’s abilities to identify key points and supportive details in the text. Jonathan scored a 100% on his assessment. We will continue to integrate concepts learned from this text throughout our language arts activities. For writing today, Jonathan finished writing the final 4 words and definitions in his glossary for his animals of the rainforest project. He defined mollusks, nocturnal, omnivores, and patterns using excerpts from a children’s dictionary. He also wrote an introduction for his piece that gave basic information about the rainforest and identified the four animals that one could learn more about by reading his book. He labeled and added an illustration to the top of his introduction page. In literature, we continued our reading of Midnight on the Moon with chapters 7 – 8. We answered comprehension questions after our reading and discussed the vocabulary terms of visor, scurried, and constellation. We made predictions as we read and determined that our first guess for the final “M” thing that the kids needed to find was not correct! Jonathan also practiced his novel-related spelling words Finally, for grammar today we enjoyed the book, Pre-and Re-, Mis-and Dis by Brian P. Cleary. This colorfully illustrated book discussed prefixes and gave us many examples of prefixes and how they are added to root words to change the meaning of the word.

Jonathan was given a menu of snack items and an amount of money. He matched the snack items to the correct amount of money. Jonathan completed problems on IXL which compared money amounts. He found the group that had the largest amount of money. Jonathan reviewed place value in the hundreds on IXL. Jonathan watched a shape brain pop video and reviewed his shapes and their characteristics.

Language Arts / Religion
Lesson Outline
Religion: Today we reviewed the unit 2 vocabulary digital flash cards. We discussed any that Jonathan did not recall. He also read the Apostles’ Creed from his prayer booklet. Language Arts: It is Word Work Wednesday! We used the word “retaliate” to focus on today. We found the definition and part of speech in a dictionary packet, the guide words on the top of the dictionary page, identified a synonym and antonym, and used the word in a sentence. We reviewed guide words and discussed how the first guide word is the first word on the page and the last guide word is the last definition on the page. In our daily language review, we continued our discussion of words that end in “s”. I am reinforcing the terminology of contraction, possessive, and plural. We also identified the subject and complete predicate in the sentences. For literature today, Jonathan first practiced his novel-based spelling words. We then enjoyed watching the Sci Show Kids video about what astronauts do. We learned about some of the qualifications needed to become an astronaut as well as some of their duties. We also read an article (3rd grade level) on readworks.org about the astronauts who walked on the moon. These activities provided some great supplemental information on our topic of the moon. We discussed the vocabulary words land (verb), steer, and gravity with our reading. We then read chapters 5-6 in our book, Midnight on the Moon. We worked through follow-up questions for comprehension and vocabulary after our reading. We discussed the meanings of barren and meteorites. Additionally, we discussed the simile “bucked like a bronco”. Finally, we wrapped up the day with work in Jonathan’s Ready Classroom textbook. On pages 143 and 144 in his book, we answered four questions to compare and contrast elements of source texts about Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

Tsunamis and Water Erosion
Lesson Outline
Jonathan worked on the concept of a tsunami today. He learned that the word means Harbour Wave in Japanese. Jonathan watched a video which explained that the tsunami is started by a volcano or earthquake coming from the ocean floor. He learned that the wave is barely perceptible out at sea because the water is so deep, but when the wave comes to shore, the lower part of the wave hits the sloping bottom leading to the shore. This makes the water mount up like a tall building. The tsunami shows its size and power when it approaches the harbor or the beach. Jonathan watched an animation of the way the wave is formed. He drew a picture of the tsunami and labeled the part. Jonathan was also interested in water erosion as seen in the Grand Canyon. He learned that Kaibab is the name given to the Grand Canyon many years ago by the Paiute Indians. The name means " mountain lying on its side." Jonathan learned that the Grand Canyon was once a mountain many millions of years ago. He watch the cartoon animation that showed how the mountain sank into the Earth and water from far off sources began to flow in the valley that it formed. Jonathan knew that the river in the Grand Canyon is the Colorado. He also made a drawing of the Grand Canyon and labeled important parts. Jonathan learned abouth the Great Dust Bowl. He watched a video made from rare footage taken during the 1930's when the sandstorms would not stop. This problem was blamed on manmade choices of over farming the same crop and making the soil depleted and dry. Jonathan is enjoying the adventures that the study of weathering is bringing.
