Lesson Outline
I enjoyed meeting Jack today. I began the session with several games of phonics dice to practice reading consonant-vowel-consonant. I noticed some b/ reversals (which is normal for this age.) I had Jack pick a "d" word. He wrote a card to have on the desk to remind him of the proper formation of "b". Next, we played "sight word Jenga." Jack successfully read the following words: the, fast, such, mark, farm, it's, live, for, again, rock, you, follow, do, five, their, against, odd, you, girl, from, out, one. To conclude, we co-read two articles from ReadWorks about hockey.

Lesson Outline
Today was my first session with Jack, who I met Jack outdoors, playing a game of Corn Hole with another student. We continued the game for a few minutes and Jack improved his technique considerably in the 10 minutes we remained outside. Once back inside, we made a hands-on project using a coffee can and different sized rubber bands. Jack enjoyed plucking the bands to create different tones and sounds. Next, we proceeded to the piano and I explained a few facts about the keyboard. Jack learned about the 8 notes in an octave and the C scale - all white keys. I then numbered the keys and wrote numbers corresponding to a song on a musical note pad. I modeled expectations and afforded jack hand-over-hand and verbal prompts initially, and he played a simple song using the white keys on the piano. He correctly recognized the melody as "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". On our next go around, Jack was able to play the song by just referring to the musical notation pad and following the numbered keys, with minimal verbal prompts. He also experimented with different chords. After our musical exercise, we worked on reading comprehension. Jack had told me about his toy Australian Shepherd puppy so we easily transitioned to a short story about a puppy. Jack demonstrated good recall and comprehension skills, and answered the 5 multiple choice questions correctly - only hesitating on one where both answers could be correct. When the reason behind the correct choice was explained, he understood the rationale, and demonstrated a good ability to process and synthesize information. We concluded our session with a game of chess. Jack explained the pieces of the chessboard to me and their corresponding movements. He was invited to participate in a game of chess and demonstrated strategic thinking and a good understanding of the game. We enjoyed both a fun and productive session.

Sorry this is so lengthy, Judie, but it was out first time together. Worked with Jack today, Tuesday, 5/4/21 - as mom indicated she wants him to stay the extra hour so as to leave with his siblings. Spoke with mom who expressed she appreciated my idea of working on reading comprehension and music. Jack indicated that he would like to play drums and chess, neither in which I am competent; however Jordan invited him to play a game with him and he explained the pieces and moves.
