Will prepared the clay to construct Tony’s shirt. First he kneaded the clay and rolled it out into ‘sheets’ from which he could cut the arms and body of the shirt. He decided what kind of collar the shirt should have, and we worked to make it just right. We determined to make him look more masculine, he needed to have some girth around his waist, so we added clay under the shirt. Then we cut the shirt to simulate it being tucked into the pants. Will then created a belt and we also added belt loops to the pants. We then covered the manikins in Saran-wrap to keep them from drying out.

Will completed the basic Claymation character of Mark, leaving the eyes, nose and mouth for the day of filming. He then mixed different colors of clay to achieve the khaki color he wanted for Tony’s pants. When he had enough clay in the khaki color, he rolled it out in ‘sheets’ and we cut the clay to make Tony’s pants. He also worked with the skin color and hair color for Tony. We then covered the manikins in Saran-wrap to keep them from drying out.

First Will was given a print of his Eiffel Tower photo, a mat, and a frame, and challenged with framing his photo. He was shown how to center the photo and attach it to the mat. He signed the mat. He cleaned and used canned air to assure there was no dust on the glass, before framing the print. We framed one print for his room and one print for him to give to his grandfather. We hung the photo on the wall using a hammer and nail. With that task completed, Will worked on creating the character Mark, from plastalina clay and a wood form. This type of clay is primarily used in Claymation movies, because it does not harden and remains plastic for easy motion. Mark, the dog, required a coat of brown, so Will was instructed how to make a “sheet” of clay, and cut it to size, to lay over the dog form. Will was able to complete 85% of Mark by the end of class time.

After watching a slide show of Will’s best from Paris, Will wanted to discuss his next movie. He had come up with a scene he thought would be suitable. He wrote the script for that scene and I read it over. After removing Matthew McConaughey from the scene, we settled on the working draft. Will was having trouble thinking of another scene, so I suggested he approach the process from a different direction. I then had him describe the wardrobe and set for the scene. We discussed how important it is to set the stage for each and every scene, and how doing so could help him think of the following (or previous) scene. Sure enough as we discussed the set, he started to suggest additional dialogue, and finally we flushed out the core information for enough scenes for the next movie.

Sort and Edit Photos -
Will continued to edit his remarkable photos of Paris. I reminded him of the things we look for in exceptional photos, the subject, the composition, the framing, the perspective, the light, the focus and the artistic value. Will has over 700 images, and is eager to bring that down to a workable number. He took several of each, so he was tasked with examining each in a series and choosing the best of the group. We also removed the photos from last year and resigned them to a flash drive, thus making more room on his computer for this year. Finally Will showed me the start of his script for a movie he hopes we can make in class this year. He has found the theme and already written some terrific humor scenes. Homework: sort and edit a few images every day before class next week.

Will needed to sort through the photos he collected since last week, and select seven images to turn in for homework. We then discussed each image and identified the subject, frame and composition of each image. We talked about film editors have to cut movie film by choosing the precise moment to end a scene. Will identified images that would be good end of scenes and some that would be odd places to end a scene. Finally, we discussed his movie and placing it on YouTube and decided to attempt the process next time we meet.

Will and I examined the images he has submitted with a theme. These collections are images he has taken and edited from his raw material. He explained what he sees in each image and how they express his theme. We discussed the subject, and reviewed the frame and composition of his images. Will was tasked with selecting a theme for next week. He chose ‘Boats’ as his theme. Homework: submit seven images that as a collection reflect the chosen theme.
