The video project -
Today Will added the music to the intro and ending of his project. He replaced one scene he was unhappy with so that the voices matched the characters lips moving. He decided how to end the film, and then finished the final credits. He decided he wants to show his movie to the school next week and designed a poster for the premiere. We also put a new UV lens protection filter on his telephoto lens and reviewed his assignment from last week. Homework: turn in five images (only) that were not taken on the same day, and fit a theme

The video project -
Will created opening credits for his movie. He selected the type of titles he wanted to use, what they should say, and the transition effects to use. He placed the credits into the project. He created images to introduce the actors and accompany the opening credits using some background images and the correct typeface. He also chose the transitions to use between these images. Finally he obtained a copy of the music he wants to include in the movie and how he wishes it to be edited. He reviewed the entire film and found one area to address for matching the images and sound better. We worked on this issue until the class period was over. After reviewing the project, Will made a small correction to the script. He recorded the new lines and added them to the project. He then addressed some small changes to his ‘actors’ actions to match the dialogue. The next step was to design the opening credits. Will chose the images that will match some of the opening the credits, and we worked on the title for the film. Finally we examined his homework assignment and discussed next week’s assignment. Will had broken his lens protection filter, and used up his lens cleaning supplies. We ordered a replacement filter, and cleaning supplies. Review of basic skills -
Will selected more sound effects for his movie project. He also determined how the final scene should look and we worked on mixing the sound and images. We discussed the name of the film, and decided to start making the credits next week. We used some of the class time to edit the photos he took during school events, and discussing the things he needs to think about when taking photos during a birthday party. Homework: take photos of at least three days in the next week, and give me five photos that are excellent, different from each other but suggest a theme.

Sound mixing -
As the movie project moves closer to completion, Will was tasked with mixing the vocal recordings with the visuals. He determined which recording was the best from many takes, and then prepared the recording for import into his movie. He then matched the vocal with the images of the character who was speaking, making sure the actor was in front of the appropriate background. He was careful to make sure the sound and the video were both the same length, and made sense. He also added some background audio files he recorded from the Internet, including footsteps and chalk writing. He added a laughter recording to areas where the two main characters are laughing. Homework: think of a name for the movie.

Sound recording and mixing -
Will and I discussed, and contrasted, the work done by a sound recorder, a sound editor, and a sound mixer on a film. With the distinction Will focused on the sound effects he needs to complete his movie. He researched several effects online and decided to record some sounds himself. We set up a small sound stage area and Will captured some sound effects including breaking eggs, and a ticking clock. He did many takes to make sure he had a clean and suitable sound bite. He then edited them into individual sounds, and chose the best from the many takes. He then added them to the movie, making sure they match the action in the film. Today he did the work of a soundman, a sound editor, and a sound mixer, all while functioning as the director of the film.

Making a video -
Today, Will took group photos of all students and teachers that went on a field trip today. Then, using iMovie, he combined background video with the stop-action video he created from his photos in Photoshop. He also examined his audio track. He used the GarageBand application to listen to his track, finding the sections he needed for a scene, and converted it to a audio file. We discussed what a sound editor and a sound mixer does Will was interested in how the ‘sound’ category at the academy awards relates to a team of people including the sound editor, mixer, recorder, Foley artists, and many others, who all work closely with the director. We also talked about the other teams the director works with when making a movie, including the costumes, sets, script writing, cinematographers, camera operators, and producers. Will reviewed his script, and made sure he was comfortable with the text. With the help of another student, He recorded the script using the GarageBand application on the computer. The students made three performances of the script to make sure we had every line. Will used a filter to remove and improve the sound of the recording. He then moved to iMovie and started to create the movie. He added the background video for each scene, in order. He converted some of his stop-action images into video using Photoshop. He then added his stop-action video to the appropriate background. He edited in close up images, into scenes where dialogue moved from one character to the other. He adjusted the speed of some video to make it more realistic, and adjusted the stability of some video using a function in iMovie.

Will re-examined the photos he collected for his movie. We had corrected issues and the characters were moving in the way he had envisioned. Will used Photoshop to convert his photos into videos. He also corrected some background video to be used in close up shots of the actors. He then opened the new video in iMovie, with the background videos. He then removed the green screen to see his actors walking against the background. The results were all the images needed for the opening scene. Will examined the remaining scenes and compiled a list of background shots.
