President Barack Obama: Election, Policies & Accomplishments
Lesson Outline
Barak Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He was in office between 2009 and 2017. One of his signature achievements was the passage of Obamacare. Obama successfully used social media during his run for office, which attracted many young voters, especially students. Obama helped to advance the cause of gay rights during his time in office, but his achievements were not universally praised. The Tea Party was one group that harshly criticized him. One of the reasons they opposed him was that they believed Obamacare (the Affordable Healthcare Act) would increase the national debts. Another reason was his purported inaction during the Benghazi terrorist attacks.

Lesson Outline
Today, Bella completed one exercise from Warm-Up #5 in "Calisthenics for the Brain." We reviewed how to distinguish between fragments and run-on sentences. She completed an IXL grammar exercise on choosing punctuation to avoid fragments and run-ons. We then read the modern translation of Scene 3 of Othello. We viewed a map of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding European countries, focusing on where Venice is in relation to the island of Cyprus, and Cyprus's proximity to Turkey. We discussed the implications of distance/location of Venice and Turkey to Cyprus, and how that distance would affect each government's claim to ownership of Cyprus.

Franklin Roosevelt: Biography, Quotes & Presidency
Lesson Outline
Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was the 32nd president of the US. He was sworn into office in 1933 and served until his death in 1945. He was trained as a lawyer and served as the governor of New York before becoming president. Roosevelt succeeded Herbert Hoover and was later succeeded himself by Harry Truman. After being elected, Roosevelt initiated his New Deal program to remedy the effects of the Depression. The New Deal consisted of a number of massive federal programs aimed at regulating the economy and providing government jobs to the unemployed. Many of the provisions of the New Deal, including Social Security, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and SEC, still exist to this day. Roosevelt served as president during World War II. FDR decided to enter the conflict after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Roosevelt formally asked Congress to declare war on Japan the following day. Roosevelt died on April 11, 1945, during his fourth term in office. FDR brought hope to Americans living through the very hard times of the Depression and world war. He would address the American people in nightly radio addresses. One of his most famous quotes: "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.
