Jaydn was interested and participated in discussion and oral reading and responding throughout the session. She did not turn on her camera when prompted. She misplaced her book while organizing her room. We were interrupted by a fire drill.
We worked on defining and applying the following literary terms: theme, setting, and irony. After we discussed the details of George and Emily's wedding day, I drafted a series of questions which Jaydn answered in writing on our shared Google Docs page. I first addressed the phrase "carpe diem" and based on our discussion and quotes from the play, Jaydn in writing answered questions on this theme of the play . After I defined the three types of irony, Jaydn examined a quote and in writing identified the type of irony and identified why the quote was ironic.

The 442nd Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment is best known as the most decorated in U.S. military history and as a fighting unit composed of Japanese American soldiers who fought in World War II. In 1944, the regiment fought primarily in the European Theater, in particular Italy, southern France, and Germany. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was formed in 1943, in response to the War Department's call for volunteers to form the segregated Japanese American army combat unit. More than 12,000 Japanese American volunteers answered the call. Ultimately 2,686 from Hawaii and 1,500 from U.S. concentration camps enlisted in the U.S. Army. Many of the soldiers from the continental U.S. had families in concentration camps while they fought abroad. The unit's motto was "Go for Broke". Jaydn learned about Congressman Daniel Inouye who represented Hawaii in Congress for 53 years. He was not only the first Japanese American to serve in Congress, he fought in the 442nd and lost his right arm during WWII. When he was first sworn into Congress in 1959, Inouye was asked to raise his right hand. He raised his left hand instead and there was a gasp. Most people didn't know that he'd lost his right arm in the line of duty.
Jaydn couldn't be reached for 4th period class. During 2nd period class, she said she felt up for our 4th period class, but she never came onto her open Teams class, nor did she respond to calls or texts

I introduced the "carpe diem" theme of the play by examining the dreams each character has failed to realize. I first defined the term and we then studied the text and located the dialogue wherein each character comments on his/her life's aspirations . We further examined how marriage forms or alters human relationships as we studied the wedding day of George and Emily. Noting how the playwright bends time and brings us back to the couple's mutual proposal, we examined how George, believing Emily is perfect, perhaps places her on a pedestal and therefore fails to appreciate her dreams ,thoughts, and feelings. Again, noting the play's theme to appreciate the quotidian, we discussed how projecting unrealistic expectations on someone can blind accurate perception.
As Act II opens, the stage manager discusses events that have transpired over the prior 3 years since the close of Act I . After we reviewed the theme of the passing time and the symbols of the passage of time, Jaydn located and discussed the cluster of time related images in the opening scene of Act II. As Act II is named "Love and Marriage" , predictably the play depicts the marriage of George and Emily. We explored the significance of Mrs Gibb's proclaiming that "weddings are a farce." Jaydn actively participated in class discussion and offered her opinion that some traditional wedding ceremonies are empty and meaningless. After we discussed how Mrs. Gibbs has forfeited her dream of travel in order to become a housewife, Jaydn commented that this scene stereotyped women as do many movies and TV shows written by men who(Jaydn argues) marginalize a woman's grief and disappointments. Jaydn was absent for our second scheduled session.
