Today Jaydn and I reviewed punctuation and when to use a period, comma, and semi-colon. We defined sentences as complete thoughts with both a subject and a verb and classified them as declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory. We reviewed the coordinating conjunctions and utilized the FANBOYS acronym to remember for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. Jayden did not do the homework that she was supposed to do for class, so it became guided practice. She and I interactively created sentences using each of the coordinating conjunctions. She learned that a comma usually precedes a coordinating conjunction. We reviewed that semi-colons only go between sentences that are closely related. We moved forward reviewing fiction and non-fiction and informational text. Jaydn shared with me that she has written one piece on informational text regarding the environment. That is excellent because we are going to move forward with a 5-paragraph essay on plastic and I will supply the reading excerpts so she won't have to do the research. She is to read "Faster Than We Can Understand" for our next meeting and outline it. Jaydn did not turn on her camera and she does not check her email. I encouraged her to begin to check her email. I explained to her the many facets of English classes and the structure of the class. Tuesdays will focus on reading. Wednesdays will focus on grammar and tomorrow she will take the IXL diagnostic. Thursdays will focus on writing, but of course everyday will encompass all including speaking skills.

Call of the Wild
Lesson Outline
Jayden discussed the term "personification", and we located examples of this technique from last night's reading assignment. I then introduced the related term- perhaps more applicable to this novel-anthropomorphism. We discussed the use of anthropomorphism in the novel and in Disney movies and the critical response sometimes lodged against the use of this technique. We then again addressed the term "primordial" in the context of deciphering Buck's imaginings of primitive man. We read through this rather abstract passage ,and I assisted Jaydn in interpreting the description and its significance as Buck returns to his primordial self . We last noted further examples of "naturalism" as Buck is sold to new owners ,an event beyond his control.

Lesson Outline
We discussed Buck's returning to his more primitive state as he makes his first kills, first a rabbit and finally of the lead dog ,Spitz. We analyzed Londons' descriptive passages highlighting both Buck's atavistic tendencies and his Naturalist literary bent. Jaydn actively participated in class discussion on these areas and on Londons' passage comparing Man's desire to hunt to Buck's innate desire to kill. We further engaged in an interesting discussion on London's explanation of happiness or "ecstasy" as occurring when one totally loses himself in an activity or pursuit. Last, we reviewed Jaydn's study guide answers to chapter 3.

A Survey of Civil War Tragedies: from Soldiers to Civilians
Lesson Outline
In 1862, the 2- day Battle of Shiloh near the border of Tennessee and Mississippi resulted in 23,746 death. Later that year, the Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day of the Civil War: nearly 23,000 died in just one day. In 1863, the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg were turning points in the Civil War that gave the North major advantages for the remaining years of the war. At the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Confederates lost one of their most beloved and intelligent generals, Stonewall Jackson. At Gettysburg, the deadliest event of the Civil War, the South lost due to poor military leadership and tactical failures that led to huge casualties. This battle served as a turning point because of the many casualties and loss of important military officers. Finally, at the Siege of Vicksburg, the Union finally achieved its goal of splitting the South in two, effectively isolating Texas and New Mexico from the Confederacy.

Lesson Comments
Jadyn was present and on time. Her homework was complete and she showed it to me in Google docs. We reviewed the comma, period, and semi-colon and discussed dependent and independent clauses. We reviewed what a complete sentence is and identified comma splices. I taught Jaydn that semi-colons are used with transitional words and only with sentences that are closely related in meaning and not joined by a coordinating conjunction. I taught her the pneumonic device FANBOYS to learn and memorize coordinating conjunctions. Jaydn was creative in her submissions and contributions, and responsive verbally
