The US Constitution: Preamble, Articles and Amendments
Lesson Outline
The Constitution of the US was created by the Founding Fathers to be the document on which the federal government is based. It was ratified in 1788 immediately after its creation. The Constitution begins with a section called the Preamble, which is followed by a number of articles and amendments. One of the key provisions in Article II of the Constitution states that a person who wishes to become president must have been born in the US and be at least thirty-five years of age. He or she must give a state of the union address from time to time and can only serve two four-year terms in office. The legislative branch of the federal government is made up of the US Congress. Its duties and responsibilities are spelled out in Article I of the Constitution. The judicial branch, which interprets the laws, is established by Article III of the Constitution. The Constitution is the most important legal document in the United States. It is also considered by many historians to be one of the most influential documents ever written.
Jaydn completed the following assignment: read "Flowers for Algernon" through progress report (5/22) and answer 6 questions of your choice from questions 35-50. Continue reading and answer study guide questions as far as you read in class and write your answers on your Google docs.
Queen Charlotte was a fascinating woman and many of her interests left a mark on history. Charlotte was a patron of the arts and an amateur botanist who helped expand Kew Gardens. She introduced the Christmas tree to Britain, after decorating one for a Christmas party for children from Windsor in 1800. She maintained a close relationship with Queen Marie Antoinette of France and was horrified by her friend's murder during the French Revolution. The Queen is said to have made debutante balls and tea time British traditions. She was also a patron of the arts. She endorsed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from the first time she heard him perform - when he was only 8 years old. The life of this British monarch was so fascinating that Netflix will be featuring a series specifically about Queen Charlotte. Jaydn was very enthusiastic about this news.
During today's class, we continued practicing conversion factors between moles, grams, and the number of atoms. Jaydn did a great job during this class and completed multiple examples.
Most people don't know about this fascinating British Monarch. Historians today believe that the wife of King George III (yes - THE King George who lost the American Revolution) was of mixed race heritage. Jaydn knew a bit about Queen Charlotte as she is a character on the TV show, "Bridgerton." But Jaydn didn't know that Queen Charlotte was a real person from history. She married King George when she was just 17 years old. They had 15 children and were married for 57 years!
The Constitution is one of the most important documents in history, and the first 10 Amendments, also known as the Bill of Rights is key because the Constitution never would have been signed without it. Not only did the Bill of Rights get the Constitution ratified, it guaranteed the rights of U.S. citizens in a way that had never been done before! The rights of U.S. citizens are still protected as much or more than anywhere else on Earth. As of 2022, there are 27 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
After reviewing the definitions of theme and symbolism, Jaydn extracted themes from the reading based on the text. We discussed two themes: how society mistreats those who are different and how conformity does not guarantee happiness. Again noting how Algernon represents Charlie Gordon and how Charlie Gordon is in effect treated as a laboratory animal , we discussed the ethics of the necessity of performing medical experimenting on animals . Jaydn actively participated in this exchange of ideas especially as we tried to rationalize the difference between experimenting on lower order animals from experimenting on higher order animals. Last, we spent a few minutes modifying some study guide answers from last session.
During today's class, we continue working on solving problems involving mass, moles, and the number of atoms of an element. Jaydn completed several practice questions.

Lesson Comments
Judie, I'm sad to say that Jaydn reported having anxiety over the lesson topic today. Per our conversation, we will cancel classes for tomorrow, 10/21. And then a new teacher will be assigned to her for the future.
