Lesson Outline
I noted how the use off the diary form of narrative created empathy in the reader ,especially as the reader sees how people abuse Charlie Gordon for entertainment . Jaydn discussed how Charlie's so called friends take advantage of his mental disability, and we explored how one theme of the story is human cruelty toward those who are least able to defend themselves. I provided literary definitions of theme and of symbolism and explained how the mouse ,Algernon, also represents the protagonist ,Charlie Gordon. As Jaydn indicated she liked working on the study guide I had distributed, I had Jaydn in writing answer and then discuss her answers to two study guide questions.

The U.S. Constitution: Preamble, Articles & Amendments
Lesson Outline
Today we began to analyze the US Constitution of the United States. It was created by the Founding Fathers to be the document on which the federal government is based. It was ratified in 1788 immediately after its creation. The Constitution begins with a section called the Preamble, which is followed by a number of articles and amendments. One of the key provisions in Article II of the Constitution states that a person who wishes to become president must have been born in the US and be at least thirty-five years of age. He or she must give a state of the union address from time to time and can only serve two four-year terms in office. The legislative branch of the federal government is made up of the US Congress. Its duties and responsibilities are spelled out in Article I of the Constitution. The judicial branch, which interprets the laws, is established by Article III of the Constitution. The Constitution is the most important legal document in the United States. It is also considered by many historians to be one of the most influential documents ever written.

Creating State Constitutions after the American Revolution
Lesson Outline
After the American Revolution the system and culture already in place in the colonies greatly affected the first state constitutions. We focused on an the state governments of new northern, mid-Atlantic and southern states. Pennsylvania's Quaker roots and belief in the equality of all men made the most radical, inclusive constitution. South Carolina's conservative approach reserved power and decision making to a few wealthy aristocrats to rule.Massachusetts came up with the idea of a special convention to develop a government that would preserve the liberties of the people, which had been fought for in the revolution.

After reviewing the next segments of the short story, Jaydn worked on preparing study guide responses. We then discussed how we might comment on the story using a double entry journal system. I discussed the questionable medical ethics of experimenting on a mentally disabled person who perhaps can not meaningfully consent to the procedure. Jaydn actively participated in discussion on this issue and offered her ideas on the limits- of even science fiction- in stretching the reader's credulity.
