Jaydn discussed and analyzed the next two chapters of the nonfiction novel Educated by Tara Westover. After our discussion, she wrote on the following prompt: Consider what obtaining an education entails. Oftentimes, when we think of the word, we think of school: classes, lectures, study groups. But much of the protagonist's education occurred outside of the classroom. Who else, aside from Tara's teachers, helped educate her?

Notified Elise early this morning that I wasn't feeling well and needed to be seen and "cleared" at Urgent Care of the Palm Beaches just next store to school. They took me right away. Relieved I didn't miss Jaydn and arrived at school with time to spare. Rapid test came back negative and I'll pick up the antibiotic they prescribed for sinus and ear infection on the way home from school later.

Some Major Events of the 1980s
Lesson Outline
We are just scratching the surface with some of the major events of the 1980s - but there is much more! To narrow it down, here are just a few of the decade's events: The first Space Shuttle, Columbia, lifts off in 1981; US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev ease tensions between the two superpowers, leading to the end of the Cold War. John Lennon was murdered in NYC in 1980. In 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated. The AIDS epidemic became recognized in the 1980s and has since killed tens of millions of people. Global warming became well known to the scientific and political community in the 1980s. The 1980s were considered to be the final decade of the Cold War. Major civil discontent and violence occurred, including the Iran–Iraq War, the Soviet–Afghan War, the 1982 Lebanon War, the bombing of Libya in 1986, and the First Intifada in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Islamism became a powerful political force in the 1980s and many terrorist organizations, including Al Qaeda, started. Acts of terrorism do begin to increase around the world. Using Music to Bring Awareness & Assistance to People & Places in Need
Lesson Outline
In the 1980s, musicians around the world continue to use their art and their fame to bring attention and assistance to important issues impacting our global community. Live Aid was a benefit concert and a music-based fundraising initiative held in July 1985. Concerts held simultaneously in England and the US aimed to raise funds for relief of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. Billed as the "global jukebox", Live Aid was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, attended by about 72,000 people and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, US, attended by 89,484 people. The "Live Aid" concert was officially opened by Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The concerts in England and the U.S. raised $127 million to combat famine in Africa. We viewed some clips from this historic event. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were held in other countries, such as the USSR, Canada, Japan, Yugoslavia, Austria, Australia and West Germany. It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time; an estimated audience of 1.9 billion, in 150 nations, watched the live broadcast, nearly 40 percent of the world population!

Using Music to Bring Awareness & Assistance to People & Places in Need
Lesson Outline
In 1971, famed Indian musician Ravi Shankar told his friend, former Beatle George Harrison about the war ravaged & disaster-stricken (by storms) country of Bangladesh. Together, they organized two fundraising concerts at Madison Square Garden to assist the people of Bangladesh. Nothing had ever been done like this on such a huge scale and it influenced the "No-Nukes" concerts of the later 1970s and Live Aid concerts of the 1980s. George Harrison then began to headline all-star UNICEF benefit concerts around the world. These concerts were highly successful in raising international awareness of the plight of refugees. The media began to praise Harrison as an ambassador for rock music and good deeds. The live recording of the Concert for Bangladesh concerts raised much needed money for people in need, became a best selling album and a fascinating documentary. It set the standard for using music to bring awareness & assistance to people, causes, and places in need.

Conflict in the Middle East: OPEC's 1970s Oil Embargo & Its Impact
Lesson Outline
The 1970s were a period of economic uncertainty. Beginning in 1973, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) issued an embargo on Middle Eastern oil. This impacted the price of a barrel of oil and subsequently lowered OPEC profits. The US also was needed to intervene in the Yom Kippur War of 1973. The price for a barrel of oil skyrocketed in 1974. Americans were forced to ration gasoline by only purchasing the product on specific days. Unfortunately, while the embargo ended in 1974, inflation and unemployment steadily rose through the rest of the decade. At the end of the decade, 1979 marked the beginning of the Iranian Revolution and, ultimately, the rise in oil cost. Oil prices rose again during the late 1970s and Americans were forced once again to ration gasoline. President Carter attempted to curb the energy and economic crisis, When President Reagan took office in 1981, times began to change, but new challenges lay ahead for the US and the world.
