Present the partial oxidation formula depicting the oxidation of ethanol into ethanal, also called acetaldehyde. Outline how the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase metabolizes the alcohol into acetaldehyde, and then the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase oxidizes that into acetyl coenzyme A. Present the physiological effects acetaldehyde has on the body. Present how the drug disulfuram inhibits the conversion of acetaldehyde to coenzyme A which causes severe nausea and vomiting, This acts as the stimulus for alcoholics not to drink when they are on the drug.
Introduce carboxylic acids, the functional group and nomenclature. Outline the formation of organic salts from these acids, along with their ionization.
We studied the second scene of Act IV wherein the witches make a second foreboding appearance. After noting the iconic "Double Double toil and trouble" chant, we explored the symbolism and significance of the 3 apparitions that the witches conjure in order to lure Macbeth into a false sense of security . Critically, we examined how Macbeth's decision to murder Macduff's innocent wife and son marks his clear transition from a hapless stooge of his wife to a calculated serial killer whose life is self governed ,not controlled by happenstance. Last, we reviewed Joshua's homework answers to study guide questions which we supplemented based on class discussion.
Discuss phenol compounds, the general formula and specifically the use of phenol by Dr.Lister as an antiseptic in the mid 1800's. Introduce the amino group, how it its derived from ammonia, and the general formula for amines. Discuss some simple amine compounds and how they are named. Show the formula for aniline dye and amines produced when decomposition occurs in animals. Introduce the functional group for aldehydes, view the formula for formalin and discuss formaldehyde as a preservative
We explored the shifting meaning of blood and water imagery in Act III. Joshua parsed and explained the famous quote of Macbeth,"I am in blood steeped so far"etc in terms of symbolism and imagery and then discussed how this soliloquy marks the play as a tragedy of character more than a tragedy of Fortune or Fate. We further discussed how the appearance of Banquo's ghost is a further example of the motif of the imaginary and the real or appearance and reality as we are left to speculate whether the ghost is "real" or whether it is a manifestation of Macbeth's guilty conscience.
Today we continued with the same concept of modeling functions given a data set. We practiced using context clues to "guess" what function type it was. Then we used our calculator to enter values and have it determine the actual equation for it. Next we used the model to help us predict future values. We determined if these values were an over or under estimate. These problems are quite "easy", but the hard part is remembering all of the steps to enter into the calculator. We both need more practice with this concept to become more fluid with it.
Today we took notes in 2.5 on Exponential functions and context modeling. Joshua followed along as I explained to him how to read context clues to determine if the given data set is linear, quadratic, or exponential. Then we used computations to determine what type of data set we were given. Next we used our calculator to run a regression. We entered in data values and the calculator estimated the function equation. Tomorrow we will continue with this lesson.
Joshua completed a physical education quiz independently - answering fifteen questions. Joshua completed the questions he knew the answers to first and then researched the answers to the questions that he was unsure of. He will discuss his answers with Mr. Shihan when he returns.

I was a substitute for Mr. Shihan from 10:34-11:19. Plans were provided - a physical education quiz.
We discussed Joshua's Act I and Act II test essays with a focus on blood and water imagery. We looked ahead in our reading to note where these images reappear later in the play. During the rest of the session, we viewed the remainer of Act I of The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Macbeth.
