Animal research/ Imagination and critical thinking skills
Lesson Outline
Dane and I discussed animals' pedigrees. We looked up the definition of the word pedigree which explains the record of descent of an animal. Dane showed me pictures of his two dogs, Max and Gunner, both of whom are rescues. He was unsure if they were pedigrees but I commented that one looked as if it were a Jack Russell terrier, and Dane believes I was correct. He also showed me a picture of a video he took near his house of Sandhill crane eating out of his hand. He participated in a creative imagination exercise which challenged him to combine two animals, in their names and features, and morph them into one. Dane came up with a tiger and eagle combination and called it a teagle. He found this humorous and enjoyed coming up with different combos of animals. We ended our session researching Sandhill cranes and iguanas. Dane learned that iguanas have several anatomical features that regulate their body heat. The research arose out of Dane's interest and questioning why iguanas and lizards move the large flap of skin under their skin, which we learned are called dewlaps. It was an informative as well as a fun session.

Today's lesson focused on completing testing. Dane spent time completing testing in the social science section and then spent the remainder of the class working on his geography project. Dane was on task.
Dane used our time together to work on his diorama. We began with a walk outside to find materials that he could repurpose. Dane found twigs and stones to make a campfire as well as hollow acorns which he placed around the fire as water pots. Finally, a fence was placed around the camp area. Dane has great, creative ideas and is working very hard on his diorama.
This morning, Dane and I began with the multiplication facts flashcards. We focused on the 11 and 12s facts as well as the facts that he still struggles with. Then, Dane completed a warm-up on finding the area, multi-digit multiplication and division problems, naming the parts of a circle, and equivalent fractions. Finally, Dane practiced using the protractor to measure left and right opening angles and answered questions online on subtracting decimals.

We completed his study of his literature book, " From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler," by identifying ways the book differed from the movie. We began making his diorama book report for, "The Indian in the Cupboard."
