Dane took his spelling test and made an 87. He learned how to write the letter i in cursive. He completed a reading comprehension story, "Magic Spinach," delving into story details, critical thinking, vocabulary, and personal responses. We talked about making a diorama for his new literature book, "The Indian in the Cupboard."
This morning, Dane and I reviewed his homework before he completed a warm-up on comparing angles, multi-digit multiplication, subtraction, and addition problems, finding the volume, long division, and decimals. Then, our lesson began the unit with basic geometry ideas. Dane and I discussed points, lines, planes, line segments, rays, and how to describe line types as parallel, intersecting, or perpendicular. We reviewed how to draw, say, and write each of these and how to recognize them in geometric drawings. Dane completed correlating problems from his textbook, using the diagram's letters to describe these geometric terms.
Dane was curious about glaciers melting, so we did a WebQuest about climate change on a NASA site together. Next class we will finish the unit on weather and climate.
Today, we worked on Dane's character drawing in Procreate. We worked on cleaning up the edges of the drawing so that they're uniform. We revisited our ink lesson to talk about controlling the stylus for more uniform line work. After cleaning up the line work, Dane learned how to use the fill tool to color in larger spaces. He continued to work on adding detail and color to his drawing for the duration of class.
This morning, we walked to the park as a reward for Dane's completion of the Stanford Achievement Test and his great attitude and determination during the past week's testing.
We learned why climate zones differ and how climate impacts the environment. Dane expressed a particular interest in Antarctica so we watched a National Geographic nature documentary on the animals and landscape there.
We learned about tropical, temperate, and polar climate zones. We discussed the precipitation, temperature, and environment in each zone. We also identified which countries are in which zones.
