Start Andrew's next still life drawing. This type of Still Life is called the Subtractive Method. So, using an 18x24 sheet of paper, cover it entirely with black compressed charcoal. Once covered, you use various erasers and blending tools to render the inverse of what you would normally draw. This can help us better see midtones and find highlights while not having to focus too much on shadows which are typically the first rendered and identified.
Go over assignments for next week, count sketchbook pages and make sure we have the proper amount. Read about the next two types of still lifes from the Still Lifes article we printed out. Work in sketchbook if there's any remaining time.
Use this day as a day to catch up on sketchbook work. Choose an image and do a full render of it in your sketchbook. We reviewed what is expected out of a sketchbook page and how it differs from your own personal sketchbook.
Line and mark making exercise in his sketchbook. This exercise is a required lesson in using lines to express rhythm, emotion and boundaries. Practice using a variety of line and style and sizes to create a dynamic abstract piece.
Finish Andrew's value study. We worked on making sure we were using as much contrast as possible. Stylistically, he can move away from that eventually but for Still Lifes and realism, we needed to focus on value and making sure we have deep black, mid tones and highlights. Once we finished his sketch, he worked in his sketchbook to make sure his sketches are up to date.
Start a value study in Andrew's sketch book. Use a fabric reference photo and draw the image focusing on the shadows, highlights and negative space. Use a blending stump and pencils H-8B.
Use class to finish our critique of the Master work. Review the types of Still Lifes and decide on one to start next week. Andrew chose a Vanitas which is a Still Life that depicts decay.
Start new week of sketchbook work. Assign 5 prompts and go over the "5 of choice' sketches. Before we start our next Still Life, we went over how to do a write-up on the article we just read about Still Lifes and how to do a critique. We went over how the first crit will be performed using the guided critique packet. Do a mock critique on a famous artwork using the packet.
