20 sketchbook pages due. We went over them at the beginning of class. We then finished the article we were reading on the history of Still Life Painting.
Use the first 15 minutes of class to go over the homework and count sketch pages. He had 18, so we need two more by tomorrow. He worked for the first half of class on starting one of the sketches due. We then moved back into our lesson on Still Life painting. We went over the types of Still Lifes throughout Art History and why they're so important.
Go over homework for the beginning of class. We ended up going over one sketch he did in particular. We went over how to up the contrast to make a sketch look more finished. We also talked about how to fix a mistake and keep working on the same piece without starting over. We ended up working for most of the class on this specific sketch and what is required for a sketchbook page to be considered "finished".
Use the beginning of class to go over the copyright packet. This packet explains how to avoid copyrighting another artist's work and when copyright material is okay to use. We went over copyright examples that were taken to court, where an artist only slightly altered another's work and tried to sell it as their own. I then gave him his sketchbook prompts to work on for the last hour.
Use class time to finish Andrew's drapery study and sketchbook pages. Go over list of sketchbook prompts and pick a couple for the weekend for him to work on.
Work on sketchbook practice for the entire class. Go over the sketches he has done for this week and work on making sure we have five so that next week isn't overwhelmed with sketches instead of his new breadth assignment.
Work on Andrew's fabric study using compressed and vine charcoal work on drawing the drapery that we set up last class. This can be done on still life paper or as a sketchbook page. Use the entire class to draw the drapes in detail. Work on using the kneaded eraser as a reductive drawing tool. We will do a full reductive drawing study but this was a small introduction as well.
Use class time to work on the 5 sketches that Andrew has due by Friday. Start brainstorming ideas for Andrew's concentration. Find a theme if there is one in his sketches and try to push that idea a little further. Complete one sketch during class. Use the end of class to set up a fabric study.
Work on finishing Andrew's still life this class. Go over what an art critique is. There are private critiques and group critiques. Over summer, we will only be doing personal critique between he and I. During the year, group critique will help with how your art piece is received. We did a mock critique and talked about ways we could've improved these still lifes, what we enjoyed, etc. Spray and protect charcoal with spray adhesive.
