Lesson Outline
Based on the novel, I incorporated a quick lesson on the proper use of adverbs to modify verbs before discussing the novel. We have discussed how novels portray character development . In this regard, Atticus offered a number of impressive insights today ,first noting how Claudia has begun to rely on "hunches" rather than intellectualizing ,and later noting how Jamie has developed a sense of compassion or understanding of his sister's desire to feel a sense of accomplishment . Atticus recognized the metaphor in Clauda's exasperated statements and was able to explain the comparisons. Last, we spent a few minutes continuing our essay development.

After Atticus completed a quiz on chapters 5-7 of the novel, we continued instruction on essay writing. After reviewing the outline we drafted yesterday, we composed a topic sentence on the character of Claudia, the novel's protagonist , and proceeded to introduce the general ideas in an introductory paragraph. As Atticus had some difficulty conceptualizing how to convert the outline form into sentences, we spent time discussing the difference between the outline and the essay and worked on sentence composition following the outline as a guide,

Atticus and I expanded on our recent lessons on division with fractions to include dividing a fraction by another fraction. Once again, we used number lines and area models to show how division and multiplication with fractions relate to each other and why multiplying the reciprocal is used to solve problems. Atticus found the quotient of whole numbers divided by fractions, fractions divided by whole numbers, and fractions divided by fractions. He turned whole numbers into fractions and then used keep, switch, and flip to solve problems. He was assigned similar problems to complete for homework.

Atticus summarized the story up to this point before reading chapter 6. While reading, we noted the characteristics of a new character, Mrs. V., who introduces hope for Melody’s education. Conversely, Melody’s current third-grade teacher paints a dismal picture of her chance for any real learning.
Atticus made some text-based predictions about how Melody’s mother will react to her classroom meltdown.

Elements of Drawing
Lesson Outline
Atticus started off class today, with a fifteen minute sketch. We talked about realism and he worked on drawing a realistic eye. He then started working on his stamp. He focused today on carving using the large V blade gauge and using it to carve around the figure. We focused mostly on not using the V blade too deep and making long, slow motions for a smoother stamp and more clear design.

This morning, Atticus and I continued our lesson on understanding division with fractions. We used number lines and area models to show how division and multiplication with fractions relate to each other and why multiplying the reciprocal is used to solve problems. Atticus found the reciprocal of fractions and whole numbers and found the quotient of dividing by fraction problems. Finally, we applied the skills of this lesson to problem-solving with real-world scenarios.
