Atticus and I continued to work on the percentages greater than 100 and less than 1 lesson. Today, we focused on the more difficult concept of percentages less than 1, completing the lesson's practice and problem-solving questions together. Atticus wrote both fractional percentages and decimal percentages as fractions and decimals. He finished with the lesson's quick quiz, scoring a 90% and he corrected missed homework problems. Atticus was assigned spiral review questions for this weekend's homework.
Ancient India, Alexander the Great Vocabulary Map Skills
Lesson Outline
Atticus took his open book test on Chapter 12. He began to read and discuss Ancient India. He wrote down his new vocabulary words and their definitions. He drew a map of India and labeled bodies of water and countries that bordered India.
Atticus diagrammed the process that changes water vapor to liquid water. He labeled the transfer of energy that takes place during this process. He read about solar halos, how they form and what they look like. He researched and created a data table for the three main cloud classifications grouped according to their heights.
Atticus and I reviewed last night's mental review questions which he did very well answering. Then, we began the lesson on how to express percents greater than 100 or less than 1 in equivalent forms. Together, we completed the lesson's examples on how to write a percent greater than 100 as a fraction and a decimal and how to write a fraction or decimal percent as a fraction and a decimal. For additional practice, Atticus completed a correlating IXL lesson on converting between percents, decimals, and fractions.
Our next novel, " Long Walk to water" is based on a true story about Salva S. who was able to emigrate from Sudan after years of deprivation and hardship in various refugee camps. We opened our inquiry by imagining a life in a desert town with no running water, no roads, no grocery stores.I had Atticus relate how many times this morning he had already used water, to wash ,to cook ,etc. From here I explained how water, which we take for granted , is a critical resource that provides the foundation for modernity. We then discussed the first chapters of the novel wherein Salva is separated from his family in 1985 during the Sudan civil war and Nya, in the parallel story, twenty years later, spends her entire day carrying water from a distant water source to her home. As Atticus encountered some difficulty with the study guide questions, we then studied the text after which Atticus completed the study guide homework.
Ancient Greeks Alexander the Great Vocabulary Map skills
Lesson Outline
Atticus completed several reading comprehension articles on Alexander the Great. He used his map skills to chart where Alexander's journey began, and where his empire was located.
Atticus modeled three ways that water enters the atmosphere and used arrows and labels to show the transfer of energy that drives the cycling of water from Earth's surface to Earth's atmosphere: evaporation, transpiration and respiration. We discussed the relationship between water in the atmosphere and bodies of water, plants and living things. We discussed what happens to water vapor that has evaporated into the atmosphere, and what temperature it is in the atmosphere when you see your breath.
