As point of view plays a critical role In the novel, we first reviewed that the novel is narrated from the third person limited point of view of a nine year old,Bruno. As such, I noted that the narration is from the point of view of a boy who does not understand anything about the Nazi party or appreciate that Auschwitz is a death camp. In fact, Bruno refers to the camp as "out-with" just as he refers to Hitler as the "Fury". Given the limited knowledge of the narrator, we then worked on drawing inferences about how Bruno's mother and maid feel about moving to Poland 's famous death camp where Bruno's father has been appointed Commander. Atticus is very interested in this aspect of history and raised many interesting historical and moral comments and questions about Nazi Germany and those who participated in the genocide.
Today, Atticus read about thermal expansion, thermal contraction and temperature. He added and illustrated these terms and definitions in his science workbook. We discussed and answered questions about the topic.
Atticus read and discussed the ancient kingdoms of Africa. We explored the reasons for their rise, their fall, and the contributions they made. He practiced taking notes while he read, and then wrote a summary.
Atticus and I reviewed how to use multiplication or division to generate equivalent ratios before correcting and completing missed questions from last night's homework. Then, Atticus applied this lesson to answer real-world ratio-related problems to prepare for the quick quiz which he then took, scoring 100%.
Ancient African Kingdoms Trade Routes Vocabulary Map Skills Note Taking
Lesson Outline
Atticus read an article about Ancient African Kingdoms and the Booming Sahara Trade routes. He learned how to take notes as he read, and to then summarize the lesson.
During the first segment of the session, Atticus completed his essay by writing a conclusion. We discussed how to use the thesis to formulate a final paragraph . We then began our study of our next book,"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." I had previously distributed background material on the rise of Hitler and anti -semitism in Germany during this time period. Atticus raised many questions about the root of anti-semitism and the rise of Hitler. I then discussed point of view and the fable genre as the novel is subtitled "a fable." We looked at the opening pages and noted how the point of view is third person limited i.e. we see the story through the eyes of nine year old Bruno who is oblivious to his father's role as the Commandant of Auschwitz. We further discussed examples of fables which typically feature animal characters.
Atticus read a scientific text about thermodynamics and James Prescott Joule. He underlined evidence Joule gives for the existence of the motion of particles. He discussed if Joule's evidence would be enough to convince someone of the motion of particles. He discussed what evidence he has learned that Joule could have included in his argument.
