Atticus and I continued the understanding of ratios lesson completing examples using bar diagrams and double number lines to solve ratio problems. Together, we completed the lesson's practice and problem-solving questions before Atticus took the lesson's quick quiz, scoring 95%. For homework, review questions on concepts taught so far were assigned.
Atticus began class with a jump rope warmup. His goal was to achieve 80 consecutive jumps. Atticus achieved 65 jumps. Next, he partook in a fun, competitive game of badminton.
As Atticus did very well in his reading comprehension homework, we today began writing an essay on O"Henry 's story ,"After Twenty Years.". We first discussed the author's direct and indirect characterizations of the two main characters and in the text underlined supporting details. I then distributed an essay prompt on the story. After we reviewed what to incorporate in the opening paragraph and how to draft a thesis statement, Atticus drafted a good thesis statement and introductory paragraph. We further discussed how to use the second paragraph to demonstrate the thesis -the divided loyalties of the main character. As I assisted Atticus in organization he continued to draft both a second and a final paragraph focusing on proving the thesis statement.
Today, we continued the understanding ratios lesson beginning with a ratios and proportions reference sheet. Atticus wrote the definition of a ratio and a proportion, the 3 ways to express ratios, the 3 ways ratios can compare quantities, and the ways ratios can be represented. Then, Atticus wrote ratios to compare quantities using real-world examples and used bar diagrams to solve ratio problems. For homework, Atticus was assigned questions from the units 1 - 4 cumulative review.
Today, Atticus started the Energy in the Atmosphere unit. We began by observing popcorn popping in slow-motion. Atticus brainstormed what causes popcorn to pop. We discussed that the liquid water in the kernel heats up and turns into a gas, expanding and causing the kernel to explode open. We performed a lab activity exploring how particle movement determines temperature. He held a wood block and a metal block in different hands and observed that the metal block was colder. He recorded that the reason is because the particles of the metal object are moving more slowly than the particles of the wood block.
Atticus and I worked step by step today on his mural drawing. I did a demonstration on where to put each line in the drawing and how much pressure to apply. We practiced slowing down and making sure every line is deliberately placed. We finished the entire outline of his character.
