Liam and I uploaded an image of Ronnie Ann Santiago, from the cartoon The Loud House, into Procreate. Liam was introduced to the Baskerville art brush. Liam was instructed to create a line art version of the image. Liam was instructed to focus on line weight and line control.
I showed Liam a photo and asked him what he noticed in the photo as well as what he wondered and inferred. This exercise helps to improve observational skills, and strengthen the ability to make thoughtful inferences and to draw connections. We then read a passage about bees and I asked Liam the same types of questions before, during, and after reading.
Liam was talking to several staff about the main character, Lincoln, on his shirt. As I have him for Social Studies, I used the name Lincoln to transition to the Social Studies subject matter. Liam correctly referenced Lincoln as the sixteenth president of the United States with minimal prompts. I then read him about 'The History of Zombies,' from an Educational site which explained how zombies have appeared in legends and myths all over the world, across time and cultures to afford him a spatial and conceptual frame of reference. I mentioned that one of the earliest known references to zombies is in the 'Epic of Gilgamesh,' an ancient 'epic' poem from the Mesopotamian region of the world - now known as Iraq. This allowed me to introduce and explain another subject-specific term intro our lesson, the fertile crescent. We also defined some words from the passage with which Liam was unfamilar (e.g., lethargic, fertile, wisp, chaos, and preview - the latter of which gave me an opportunity to discuss prefixes of words). After I explained the meaning of 'preview,' and used it in a sentence, Liam made a personal connection. He stated "I saw the preview of Elemental, a pixar show," which was an appropriate association. Liam frequently related words to shows he has watched, but was redirected to follow the thread of our discussion before moving on to another thought or topic. He was invited to bring in pictures of his family members if he wanted to display them on part of his bulletin board, but he opted not to; instead, we can put up the Bio Poem he wrote in class last week.
Liam completed his Scientific Wheel which explained the steps in the scientific method. He read an article about the importance of plants. He wrote down the 4 new vocabulary words and their definitions in his science notebook. His new vocabulary words are edible, erosion, photosynthesis, and raw materials.
Liam and I explored several coding programs as he expressed an interest in creating scenes with his favorite character, Lincoln Loud. He had the opportunity to add his character to the scene and create code that allowed him to speak and move back and forth. He seemed to enjoy that.
Scientific Method Calendar Vocabulary Words Reading Comprehension
Lesson Outline
Liam completed his calendar. He wrote down his new vocabulary words and their definitions into his science notebook. He read an article about how plants have to adapt in order to survive and reproduce. He answered in writing comprehension questions pertaining to the article.
This was Liam's first day in school following the summer break. He was excited to tell me that he went to Italy over the summer. We took a short tour of the school to introduce him to new teachers and students, many of whom he remembered. After returning to class, we reviewed his schedule, teachers, and courses and began work on a bio poem, a short poem that may be either autobiographical or biographical in nature (we defined the terms). Liam's was to add details about his life using adjectives to complete open-ended sentences. He demonstrated good comprehension of the concept after I explained the function of adjectives in language and we went through a few examples. Liam correctly identified the adjectives in the sentences given. He completed the Bio Poem, given supportive prompts, using varied vocabulary. He followed directions well and has clear penmanship; Liam wrote neatly and legibly with little need for spelling assistance.

Lesson Comments
Liam is a bright boy whose thinking is tangential. He loves to share information and is inquisitive. Refocusing techniques were beneficial to facilitate his attention to the task at hand but he was responsive and complied with the re-direction well. He wrote neatly and legibly but admitted he does not like to write.
It was a pleasure meeting Liam today. He told me about his brother and his love for Lincoln Loud. I have never heard of the Loud House before! Today we just talked and got to know each other. I look forward to working with Liam this year!
